Résumé : Empirical surveys conducted in the area of international economy have clearly identified the factors of relocation of French SMEs during the noughties. A decade later, we have enough data to analyse the consequences of relocation on SMEs’ business activities. While the traditional theory of international trade depicts non-specialisation as an irreversible and unequivocal trend, the relocation of companies invalidates this assumption. The neo-technological trend, with the product life cycle at Vernon’s, shows the im- portance of technology and innovation. Adopting this as a starting point, we seek to expose the way in which innovation is the key of success for SMEs relocating to France. Using the sole longitudinal case study on the ATOL coop, we are assessing the different types of innovation which it implemented (preliminary and running innovations) to make its relocation durable.
