Résumé : The main goal of ultrasound tomography (UT) is to provide both a high contrast imaging and a multi-parametric imaging. Within the frame of soft-tissue imaging, we focus our application to breast inspection for early stage cancer detection. Conforming with breast anatomy, ANAIS (ANAtomical Imaging and Interventional System) prototype is designed including a semicircular antenna which enables imaging of ductolobular structures sensitive to cancer initiation. The 200-mm diameter half-ring transducer contains 1024 elements with 3-MHz center frequency and 2.25-MHz (-6 dB) bandwidth. Chirp excitation is used to improve contrast with pulse compression method. Performed with a needle hydrophone, calibration studies yield system characteristics such as field distribution or transducer element localization. Taking advantage of a near field reconstruction algorithm, tomographic images of thin wire and of breast anthropomorphic phantom (CIRS) are presented. The low frequency approach and the high density of the ring antenna provide interesting results that, as we expect, may still be enhanced.

Résumé : Background and aims: Non invasive approaches are useful to differentiate simple steatosis from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in obese and morbidly obese patients. The aim of this study was to develop a new scoring system to diagnose definitive NASH. Methods: Preoperative clinical and biological data including serum caspase 3-generated cytokeratin-18 fragments (CK18) and peroperative liver biopsies were obtained from 464 morbidly obese patients who had undergone bariatric surgery. The cohort was divided into two groups: training group (n=310) and validation group (n=154). Definitive NASH was defined according to Kleiner's classification with a NAFLD Activity Score (NAS) ≥5. Results: Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), CK18 fragments and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MS) were independent predictors for discriminating patients with NAS ≥5 in the training group. These three parameters were used to carry out a scoring system for the prediction of NAS ≥5. Whereas serum CK18 fragment alone had an Area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) curve = 0.74, AUROC curves of the scoring system were 0.88 and 0.83 in the training and in the validation group respectively. Conclusion: A simple and non invasive composite model including MS, ALT and CK18 fragments was able to accurately predict NAS ≥5 in morbidly obese subjects.

Résumé : The temperature dependence of the Raman spectrum of a gelatine-based composite material doped with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT@gelatin) is reported. A significant up-shift of the G-mode frequency is observed when the temperature is decreased from room temperature to 20~K. This frequency shift is significantly stronger than the one found for pure thermal effects. In contrast, the features of the radial breathing modes (frequencies and width) display no significant change in the same temperature range. These results are well understood by considering a uniaxial strain on the nanotube induced by the thermal expansitivity mismatch between the nanotube and the surrounding matrix.

Résumé : We consider the problem of fitting linearly parameterized models, that arises in many computer vision problems such as road scene analysis. Data extracted from images usually contain non-Gaussian noise and outliers, which makes non-robust estimation methods ineffective. In this paper, we propose an overview of a Lagrangian formulation of the Half-Quadratic approach by, first, revisiting the derivation of the well-known Iterative Re-weighted Least Squares (IRLS) robust estimation algorithm. Then, it is shown that this formulation helps derive the so-called Modified Residuals Least Squares (MRLS) algorithm. In this framework, moreover, standard theoretical results from constrained optimization can be invoked to derive convergence proofs easier. The interest of using the Lagrangian framework is also illustrated by the extension to the problem of the robust estimation of sets of linearly parameterized curves, and to the problem of robust fitting of linearly parameterized regions. To demonstrate the relevance of the proposed algorithms, applications to lane markings tracking, road sign detection and recognition, road shape fitting and road surface 3D reconstruction are presented.

Résumé : We describe experimentally the formation of a pattern for drop impacts on thin liquid films for a large range of impact parameters. Using the shallow-water approximation, we are able to explain the main mechanisms leading to these patterns: it consists in the linear instability of the self-similar axisymmetric radial solution of the equations. Agreement between the experiments and the theory is remarkably good, leading, in particular, to the prediction that the most unstable fold number scales like ðWe=h 1 Þ 2=7 .

Résumé : To celebrate the first 10 years of Nature Reviews Neuroscience, we invited the authors of the most cited article of each year to look back on the state of their field of research at the time of publication and the impact their article has had, and to discuss the questions that might be answered in the next 10 years. This selection of highly cited articles provides interesting snapshots of the progress that has been made in diverse areas of neuroscience. They show the enormous influence of neuroimaging techniques and highlight concepts that have generated substantial interest in the past decade, such as neuroimmunology, social neuroscience and the 'network approach' to brain function. These advancements will pave the way for further exciting discoveries that lie ahead.
