Résumé : Objectives: To evaluate the performance and cost-effectiveness of the WHO recommendations of incorporating risk-assessment scores and population prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) into vaginal discharge syndrome (VDS) algorithms. Methods: Non-pregnant women presenting with VDS were recruited at a non-governmental sexual health clinic in Sofia, Bulgaria. NG/CT was diagnosed by PCR and vaginal infections by microscopy. Risk factors for NG/CT were identified in multivariable analysis. Four algorithms based on different combinations of behavioural factors, clinical findings and vaginal microscopy were developed. Performance of each algorithm was evaluated for detecting vaginal and cervical infections separately. Cost-effectiveness was based on cost-per-patient-treated and cost-per-case-correctly-treated. Sensitivity analysis explored the influence of NG/CT prevalence on cost-effectiveness. Results: 60% (252/420) of women had genital infections, with 9.5% (40/423) having NG/CT. Factors associated with NG/CT included new and multiple sexual partners in the last 3 months, symptomatic partner, childlessness, and >10 polymorphonuclear cells-per-field on vaginal microscopy. For NG/CT detection, the algorithm that relied solely on behavioural risk-factors was less sensitive but more specific than those that included speculum exam or microscopy but had higher correct-treatment rate and lower over-treatment rates. The cost-per-true-case-treated using a combination of risk factors, speculum exam and microscopy was 24.08. A halving and tripling of NG/CT prevalence would have approximately the inverse impact on the cost-effectiveness estimates. Conclusions: Management of NG/CT in Bulgaria was improved by the use of syndromic approach that included risk-scores. Approaches that did not rely on microscopy lost sensitivity but were more cost-effective.

Résumé : Based on the Kennaugh-Huynen decomposition, the Target Scattering Vector Model (TSVM) allows to extract four roll-invariant parameters. Those parameters are necessary for an unambiguous description of the target scattering mechanism. The proposed method consists in applying the TSVM prior to the GLRT-LQ detector for the detection of any oriented target.

Résumé : Modern SAR systems have high resolution which leads the backscattering clutter to be non-Gaussian. In order to properly classify images from these systems, a non-Gaussian noise model is considered: the SIRV model. A statistical test of equality of covariance matrices is used to classify pixels, taking into account the critical region of the test which rejects the likeliness of a covariance matrix to any of the class centers. This test is applied on experimental data obtained with the ONERA RAMSES system in X-band. The results show a good separation between natural and man-made areas of the image.

Résumé : This paper presents a new estimation scheme for optimally deriving clutter parameters with high resolution POLSAR data. The heterogeneous clutter in POLSAR data was described by the Spherically Invariant Random Vectors model. Three parameters were introduced for the high resolution POLSAR data clutter: the span, the normalized texture and the speckle normalized covariance matrix. The asymptotic distribution of the novel span estimator is also investigated. The proposed method is tested with airborne POLSAR images provided by the ONERA RAMSES system.

Résumé : SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), launched in November 2, 2009 is the first satellite mission addressing the salinity measurement from space through the use of MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis), a new two-dimensional interferometer designed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and operating at L-band. This paper presents a summary of the sea surface salinity retrieval approach implemented in SMOS, as well as first results obtained after completing the mission commissioning phase in May 2010. A large number of papers have been published about salinity remote sensing and its implementation in the SMOS mission. An extensive list of references is provided here, many authored by the SMOS ocean salinity team, with emphasis on the different physical processes that have been considered in the SMOS salinity retrieval algorithm.

Résumé : In a previous model [3], a spectral timing neural network [4] was used to account for the role of the Hs in the acquisition of classical conditioning. The ability to estimate the timing between separate events was then used to learn and predict transitions between places in the environment. We propose a neural architecture based on this work and explaining the out-of-field activities in the Hs along with their temporal prediction capabilities. The model uses the hippocampo-cortical pathway as a means to spread reward signals to entorhinal neurons. Secondary predictions of the reward signal are then learned, based on transition learning, by pyramidal neurons of the CA region.
