Résumé : In this paper, we proceed along our analysis of the Korteweg-de Vries approximation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation initiated in a previous paper. At the long-wave limit, we establish that solutions of small amplitude to the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation split into two waves with opposite constant speeds $\pm \sqrt{2}$, each of which are solutions to a Korteweg-de Vries equation. We also compute an estimate of the error term which is somewhat optimal as long as travelling waves are considered. At the cost of higher regularity of the initial data, this improves our previous estimate.

Résumé : The second human beta-galactoside alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase (hST6Gal II) differs from hST6Gal I, the first member of ST6Gal family, in substrate specificity and tissue expression pattern. While ST6GAL1 gene is expressed in almost all human tissues, ST6GAL2 shows a restricted tissue-specific pattern of expression, mostly expressed in embryonic and adult brain. In order to understand the mechanisms involved in the transcriptional regulation of ST6GAL2, we first characterized the transcription start sites (TSS) in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. 5' RACE experiments revealed multiple TSS located on three first alternative 5' exons, termed EX, EY and EZ, which are unusually close on the genomic sequence and are all located more than 42 kbp upstream of the first common coding exon. Using Taqman duplex Q-PCR, we showed that the ST6GAL2 transcripts initiated by EX or EY are mainly expressed in both brain-related cell lines and human cerebral cortex, testifying for the use of a similar transcriptional regulation in vivo. Furthermore, we also showed for the first time hST6Gal II protein expression in the different lobes of the human cortex. Luciferase reporter assays allowed us to define two sequences upstream EX and EY with a high and moderate promoter activity, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis and site-directed mutagenesis showed that NF-kappaB and NRSF are likely to act as transcriptional repressors, whereas neuronal-related development factors Sox5, Puralpha and Olf1, are likely to act as transcriptional activators of ST6GAL2. This suggests that ST6GAL2 transcription could be potentially activated for specific neuronal functions.

Résumé : The optical properties of Sc/Si periodic multilayers are analyzed at three wavelengths in the X-ray range: 0.154, 0.712 and 12.7 nm. Fitting the reflectivity curves obtained at these three wavelengths enable us to constrain the parameters, thickness, density and roughness of the various layers, of the studied multilayers. Scattering curves were also measured at 12.7 nm on some samples to obtain an estimate of the correlation length of the roughness. Two sets of multilayers are used, with and without B4C diffusion barrier at the interfaces. To see the efficiency of the B4C layers the measures are performed after annealing up to 400 degrees C. A dramatic change of the structure of the Sc/Si multilayer is observed between 100 and 200 degrees C leading to a strong loss of reflectivity. For the Sc/B4C/Si/B4C multilayer the structure is stable up to 200 degrees C after which a progressive evolution of the stack occurs.

Résumé : The density current parameterization coupled with Emanuel's convection scheme, described in Part I of this series of papers, is tested in a single-column framework for continental and maritime convective systems. The case definitions and reference simulations are provided by cloud-resolving models (CRMs). For both cases, the wake scheme yields cold pools with temperature and humidity differences relative to the environment in reasonable agreement with observations (with wake depth on the order of 2 km over land and 1 km over ocean). The coupling with the convection scheme yields convective heating, drying, and precipitation similar to those simulated by the CRM. Thus, the representation of the action of the wakes on convection in terms of available lifting energy (ALE) and available lifting power (ALP) appears satisfactory. The sensitivity of the wake-convection system to the basic parameters of the parameterization is widely explored. A range of values for each parameter is recommended to help with implementing the scheme in a full-fledged general circulation model. © 2010 American Meteorological Society.

Résumé : Les changements climatiques annoncés vont-ils induire une modification du cycle de l'eau et des débits dans un bassin comme la Loire, géologiquement contrasté et soumis à des climats variés (océanique, continental, cévenol) ? Nos résultats suggèrent une diminution des ressources en eau disponibles en moyennes eaux et en étiage. En revanche la dynamique et l'intensité des crues ne devraient pas varier significativement.

Résumé : Vault sutures have proven their low reliability for estimating age at death in individual forensic science cases. We broke down the palatine sutures of 134 skulls (with known sex and age at time of death) into 15 subparts and 5 stages of fusion to obtain a mean coefficient of obliteration (Cp) which was then linked to five age classes. We completed this study with multiple regression equations of total palatine suture scores. We compared our results with those obtained using the Mann method on the one hand and classically segmented and scored ectocranial suture age determination methods on the other. Palatine sutures generally do not estimate age at death any better than cranial vault sutures. Despite the partly subjective aspect of suture study, palatine suture observation contributes additional information to age-range estimation, especially in old and very old subjects where other methods lose their effectiveness.
