Résumé : It is well known that a wide range of kronian magnetospheric phenomena, including the Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR), exhibit oscillations near the planetary rotation period. However, although the SKR is believed to be generated by unstable auroral electrons, no connection has been established to date between diurnal SKR modulations and UV auroral power. We use an empirical SKR phase determined from Cassini observations to order the `quiet time' total emitted UV auroral power as observed by the Hubble Space Telescope in programs during the interval 2005-2009. Our results indicate that both the northern and southern UV powers are dependent on SKR phase, varying diurnally by factors of ˜3. We also show that the UV variation originates principally from the morning half of the oval, consistent with previous observations of the SKR sources.

Résumé : The IRIM group is a consortium of French teams working on Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval. This paper describes our participation to the TRECVID 2010 semantic indexing and instance search tasks. For the semantic indexing task, we evaluated a number of different descriptors and tried different fusion strategies, in particular hierarchical fusion. The best IRIM run has a Mean Inferred Average Precision of 0.0442, which is above the task median performance. We found that fusion of the classification scores from different classifier types improves the performance and that even with a quite low individual performance, audio descriptors can help. For the instance search task, we used only one of the example images in our queries. The rank is nearly in the middle of the list of participants. The experiment showed that HSV features outperform the concatenation of HSV and edge histograms or the wavelet feature.

Résumé : Human lipodystrophies represent a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by generalized or partial fat loss, with fat hypertrophy in other depots when partial. Insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and diabetes are generally associated, leading to early complications. Genetic forms are uncommon: recessive generalized congenital lipodystrophies result in most cases from mutations in the genes encoding seipin or the 1-acyl-glycerol-3-phosphate-acyltransferase 2(AGPAT2). Dominant partial familial lipodystrophies result from mutations in genes encoding the nuclear protein lamin A/C or the adipose transcription factor PPARgamma. Importantly, lamin A/Cmutations are also responsible for metabolic laminopathies, resembling the metabolic syndrome and progeria, a syndrome of premature aging. A number of lipodystrophic patients remain undiagnosed at the genetic level. Acquired lipodystrophy can be generalized, resembling congenital forms, or partial, as the Barraquer-Simons syndrome, with loss of fat in the upper part of the body contrasting with accumulation in the lower part. Although their etiology is generally unknown, they could be associated with signs of autoimmunity. The most common forms of lipodystrophies are iatrogenic. In human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients, some first-generation antiretroviral drugs were strongly related with peripheral lipoatrophy and metabolic alterations. Partial lipodystrophy also characterize patients with endogenous or exogenous long-term corticoid excess. Treatment of fat redistribution can sometimes benefit from plastic surgery. Lipid and glucose alterations are difficult to control leading to early occurrence of diabetic, cardiovascular and hepatic complications.

Résumé : Les productions issues d'animaux d'élevage sont fréquemment rythmées sur les saisons, avec pour conséquence une disponibilité saisonnière en produits frais sur les marchés (viandes, lait et fromages, oeufs). Parmi les espèces d'intérêt en production animale, les poissons et les oiseaux sont généralement considérés comme plus directement sensibles aux facteurs externes, essentiellement les variations de la température pour les poissons et de la durée de la phase claire du jour, ou photopériode, pour les oiseaux. Chez de nombreuses espèces incluant des mammifères, nous utilisons largement des traitements photopériodiques artificiels qui consistent en un éclairement supplémentaire pendant les jours courts naturels (chez le poulet, la dinde, la pintade, le mouton et la chèvre) ou en l'administration de mélatonine pendant les jours longs (chez le mouton et la chèvre); ils permettent d'ajuster la période de reproduction aux souhaits de l'éleveur et/ou d'abolir complètement les variations saisonnières de la production spermatique dans les centres producteurs de semence destinée à l'insémination artificielle (mammifères), et dans les élevages (volailles, poissons). Par ailleurs, des traitements photopériodiques « purs » (sans mélatonine), en particulier lorsqu'ils sont appliqués en bâtiments ouverts, sont non invasifs et donc respectent l'intégrité et le bien-être des animaux.

Résumé : The aim is to evaluate the importance of the bacterial composition on the resilience of the organic matter assimilation in the sea. Chemostats were inoculated with coastal and offshore bacterial communities. Bacterial density and protein synthesis increased before stabilizing, and this response to confinement was more marked in the offshore chemostats. Before the toluene perturbation the community structure in the coastal chemostats remained complex whereas the offshore chemostats became dominated by Alteromonas sp. After the perturbation, bacterial protein synthesis was inhibited before peaking briefly at a level fivefold to that observed before the perturbation and then stabilizing at a level comparable to that before the perturbation. Alteromonas dominated both the coastal and the offshore communities immediately after the perturbation and the coastal communities did not recover their initial complexity. Cell lysis induced by the toluene perturbation favoured the growth of Alteromonas which could initiate growth rapidly in response to the nutrient pulse. Despite their different community structure in situ, the resilience of protein synthesis of coastal and offshore bacterial communities was dependent on Alteromonas, which dominated in the chemostats. Here we show that although Alteromonas sp. dominated in artificial offshore and coastal communities in chemostats, their response time to the shock was different. This suggests that future perturbation studies on resilience in the marine environment should take account of ecosystem history.
