Résumé : P>Reasons for performing study: Although beach training is commonly used in horses, limb loading on beach sand has never been investigated. A dynamometric horseshoe (DHS) is well adapted for this purpose. Objectives: To compare ground reaction force (GRF) and fetlock kinematics measured in harness trotters on 2 tracks of beach sand with different water content. Methods: Two linear sand tracks were compared: firm wet sand (FWS, 19% moisture) vs. deep wet sand (DWS, 13.5% moisture). Four French trotters (550 +/- 22 kg) were used. Their right forelimb was equipped with a DHS and skin markers. Each track was tested 3 times at 7 m/s. Each trial was filmed by a high-speed camera (600 Hz); DHS and speed data acquisition was performed at 10 kHz on 10 consecutive strides. All recordings were synchronised. The components Fx (parallel to the hoof solar surface) and Fz (perpendicular) of the GRF were considered. For 3 horses the fetlock angle and forelimb axis-track angle at landing were measured. Statistical differences were tested using the GLM procedure (SAS; P < 0.05). Results: Stance duration was increased on DWS compared to FWS. Fzmax and Fxmax (oriented, respectively, downwards and forwards relatively to the solar surface) and the corresponding loading rates, were decreased on DWS and these force peaks occurred later. Fxmin (backwards) was not significantly different between both surfaces; the propulsive phase (Fx negative) was longer and the corresponding impulse higher, on DWS compared to FWS. The forelimb was more oblique to the track at landing and maximal fetlock extension was less and delayed on DWS. Conclusions: This study confirms that trotting on deep sand overall reduces maximal GRF and induces a more progressive limb loading. However, it increases the propulsive effort and likely superficial digital flexor tendon tension at the end of stance, which should be taken into account in beach training.

Résumé : Représenter la Révolution défend l'idée que le contexte des années 1789-1794, en imposant l'actualité comme nouvel horizon artistique, a produit une rupture radicale avec les fondements traditionnels de la peinture d'histoire: la représentation des événements contemporains apparaît dès lors comme l'art de la Révolution française par excellence. Circonscrite à la célébration du pouvoir monarchique sous l'ancien régime, l'iconographie contemporaine se met au service de la politique dans les années 1770 et 1780. Le rôle précurseur de peintres actifs à Londres inspirés par la guerre d'indépendance américaine, est rappelé. La diversité des moyens mobilisés pour fixer l'énergie de l'événement, ainsi que la postérité immédiate de cet effort de l'imagination artistique sont le sujet de cet essai. Les Dix-Août de Jacques Bertaux et de François Gérard, qui représentent l'insurrection populaire le 10 août 1792 à Paris pour mettre fin à la royauté, sont au cour de la démonstration. Ces deux compositions condensent les enjeux d'un tournant de la peinture française vers la modernité. Une riche illustration, comprenant des œuvres souvent peu connues, permet de découvrir des incunables du Romantisme.

Résumé : The new monetary and financial architecture in South America rests on two important premises: a financial argument built around the creation of a new development bank, the Banco del Sur, and a monetary argument, founded on the notion of monetary regional integration, independent of the use of the U.S. dollar. This architecture contrasts with the main model of regional monetary integration that consists of two possible solutions: full monetary union or dollarization. The second model of regional monetary integration, however, is more consistent with Keynes and Post Keynesians. It rests on the creation of a common currency—or a unit of account—that does not supersede the existence of national currencies. This currency would be used solely for settling interregional payments, much like Keynes's bancor.

Résumé : Ce travail présente les résultats de l’étude de l’industrie lithique d’un site de plein air badegoulien situé au nord du département de la Loire. Les vestiges proviennent de plusieurs sondages ponctuels, réalisés à la fin des années 1970. L’industrie lithique présente des caractères généraux que l’on retrouve dans la plupart des séries, notamment celles du Sud-Ouest de la France et qui semblent propres au Badegoulien. Les matières premières utilisées sont majoritairement locales et exploitées selon trois chaînes opératoires de débitage disjointes (laminaire, lamellaire et d’éclats). Les matières premières allochtones sont, quant à elles, réservées au débitage lamellaire pour la confection des lamelles à dos. Les caractéristiques générales des débitages sont comparables à ce qu’on observe dans d’autres sites avec notamment un débitage laminaire de type unipolaire réalisé principalement à la pierre tendre et un débitage d’éclats courts normalisés utilisés comme supports de raclettes.

Résumé : BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a life-threatening neurodegenerative disease involving upper and lower motor neurons loss. Clinical features are highly variable among patients and there are currently few known disease-modifying factors underlying this heterogeneity. Serotonin is involved in a range of functions altered in ALS, including motor neuron excitability and energy metabolism. However, whether serotoninergic activity represents a disease modifier of ALS natural history remains unknown. METHODOLOGY: Platelet and plasma unconjugated concentrations of serotonin and plasma 5-HIAA, the major serotonin metabolite, levels were measured using HPLC with coulometric detection in a cohort of 85 patients with ALS all followed-up until death and compared to a control group of 29 subjects. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Platelet serotonin levels were significantly decreased in ALS patients. Platelet serotonin levels did not correlate with disease duration but were positively correlated with survival of the patients. Univariate Cox model analysis showed a 57% decreased risk of death for patients with platelet serotonin levels in the normal range relative to patients with abnormally low platelet serotonin (p = 0.0195). This protective effect remained significant after adjustment with age, gender or site of onset in multivariate analysis. Plasma unconjugated serotonin and 5-HIAA levels were unchanged in ALS patients compared to controls and did not correlate with clinical parameters. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The positive correlation between platelet serotonin levels and survival strongly suggests that serotonin influences the course of ALS disease.

Résumé : Several approaches for the enantiodivergent synthesis of P-chirogenic mono- and diphosphines are described, using ephedrine methodology and phosphine borane chemistry. Firstly, both enantiomers of a tertiary phosphine can be obtained starting from the same oxazaphospholidine borane complex, prepared from (+)-ephedrine, when changing the order of addition of the organolithium reagents during the synthetic pathway. The second approach is based on the chlorophosphine boranes, which react with an organolithium reagent, to afford the corresponding phosphines with inversion of configuration. In the case where the chlorophosphine borane reacts with the t-butyl lithium reagent, a metal-halogen exchange occurs to afford the corresponding phosphide borane with retention of the configuration. The reaction of the phosphide borane with an alkyl halide leads to the same phosphine, but with the opposite configuration. Another approach depends on the diastereoselective preparation of the starting oxazaphospholidine borane complex from (−)-ephedrine, which leads according the case, to either one or the other enantiomer of a phosphine. Finally, the synthesis of (R,R)- and (S,S)-1,2-bis(methylphenylphosphino)ethane is also demonstrated using both enantiomers of the P-chirogenic diphosphinite diborane, which simultaneously allows the introduction of alkyl- or aryl substituents on the phosphorus atoms. In summary, these approaches show the great efficiency of the "ephedrine methodology" for the enantiodivergent synthesis of P-chirogenic mono- and diphosphines, and bearing alkyl or aryl substituents.
