Résumé : Reasons for performing study: Sandy beaches are often considered good training surfaces for trotter horses. However, their biomechanical effects on locomotion are insufficiently documented. Events at hoof impact have mostly been studied under laboratory conditions with accelerometers, but there is lack of data (acceleration, force, movement) on events occurring under every day practical conditions in the field. Objectives: To investigate hoof landing and stride parameters on different tracks (from wet to dry) of a sand beach and on an asphalt road. Methods: The right front hoof of 4 trotter horses was equipped with a triaxial accelerometer and a dynamometric horseshoe. Acceleration and force recordings (10 kHz) were synchronised with a high speed movie (600 Hz). Horses were driven on a sand beach where 3 tracks of decreasing water content had been delimited (from the sea to the shore): firm wet sand (FWS), deep wet sand (DWS) and deep dry sand (DDS). Firm wet sand and DWS were compared at 25 km/h and DDS compared to an asphalt road at 15 km/h. Recordings (10 strides) were randomly repeated 3 times. Statistical differences were tested using a GLM procedure (P < 0.05). Results: Main significant results were 1) a decrease in the amplitude of the vertical deceleration (and force) of the hoof during impact on a softer surface (about 59% between DWS and FWS and 95% between DDS and asphalt), 2) a decrease in the longitudinal braking deceleration (and force) on softer grounds (50% for DWS vs. FWS and 55% for DDS vs. asphalt), 3) a decrease in the stride length and an increase in the stride frequency on a softer surface. Conclusions and clinical relevance: Drier sand surfaces reduce shock and impact forces during landing. For daily training, it should, however, be realised that improved damping characteristics are associated with a shorter stride length and a higher stride frequency.

Résumé : TWIST and adenomatosis polyposis coli (APC) are critical signaling factors in normal bone development. In previous studies examining a homogeneously treated cohort of pediatric osteosarcoma patients, we reported the frequent and concurrent loss of both TWIST and APC genes. On these bases, we created a related animal model to further explore the oncogenic cooperation between these two genes. We performed intercrosses between twist-null/+ and Apc1638N/+ mice and studied their progeny. The Apc1638N/+; twist-null/+ mice developed bone abnormalities observed by macroscopic skeletal analyses and in vivo imaging. Complementary histologic, cellular, and molecular analyses were used to characterize the identified bone tumors, including cell culture and immunofluorescence of bone differentiation markers. Spontaneous localized malignant bone tumors were frequently identified in Apc1638N/+; twist-null/+ mice by in vivo imaging evaluation and histologic analyses. These tumors possessed several features similar to those observed in human localized osteosarcomas. In particular, the murine tumors presented with fibroblastic, chondroblastic, and osteoblastic osteosarcoma histologies, as well as mixtures of these subtypes. In addition, cellular analyses and bone differentiation markers detected by immunofluorescence on tumor sections reproduced most murine and human osteosarcoma characteristics. For example, the early bone differentiation marker Runx2, interacting physically with hypophosphorylated pRb, was undetectable in these murine osteosarcomas, whereas phosphorylated retinoblastoma was abundant in the osteoblastic and chondroblastic tumor subtypes. These characteristics, similar to those observed in human osteosarcomas, indicated that our animal model may be a powerful tool to further understand the development of localized osteosarcoma.

Résumé : The adsorption geometries, energies, and vibrational frequencies of methanol on MgO defective surfaces have been calcd. by periodic DFT simulations. The results are very comparable with those obtained with water and are also in very good accordance with microcalorimetry and IR expts. At low coverage, the dissocn. is obsd. on all defects involving ions in low coordinations. Over and above the coordination no. of surface ions, the adsorption energy is strongly governed by the surface topol.: dissocn. on confined sites gives rise to methoxy groups highly stabilized by bridging two or even three cations. The occurrence of such very strong sites on MgO powder is confirmed by microcalorimetry. The dissocn. ability depends on the methanol coverage because it modifies the surface relaxation and the network of H bonds, resulting, for a given defect, in similar adsorption energies for mol. and dissocd. species at high coverage. This explains why there are more strong sites (quantified by microcalorimetry) than dissocg. sites (quantified by IR). [on SciFinder(R)]

Résumé : AbstractLiver fibrosis (LF) must be assessed before talking treatment decisions in hepatitis B. In Burkina Faso, liver biopsy (LB) remains the “gold standard” method for this purpose. Access to treatment might be simpler if reliable alternative techniques for LF evaluation were available. The hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients who underwent LB was invited to have liver stiffness measurement (Fibroscan) and serum marker assays. Fifty-nine patients were enrolled. The performance of each technique for distinguishing F0F1 from F2F3F4 was compared. The area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves was 0.61, 0.71, 0.79, 0.82, and 0.87 for the aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index (APRI), Fib-4, Fibrotest, Fibrometre, and Fibroscan. Elastometric thresholds were identified for significant fibrosis and cirrhosis. Combined use of Fibroscan and a serum marker could avoid 80% of biopsies. This study shows that the results of alternative methods concord with those of histology in HBV-infected patients in Burkina Faso. These alternative techniques could help physicians to identify patients requiring treatment.

Résumé : Pursuing the electrochemical evaluation vs. Li of carbonyl-based cyclic structures deriving from the oxocarbon family, polyketones with N-cyclic structure are investigated to probe the potential modifications. In this communication, we specifically report on the electrochemical investigation of our first selected family of heterocycles based on the 2,3,5,6-tetraketopiperazine unit. Working in a systematic way, a series of tetraketopiperazine molecules with quite different R groups as substituents (i.e., phenyl, allyl and propyl functions) have been synthesized and characterized. Such small molecules were found to rapidly solubilise in commonly used electrolytes. To bypass this issue, we have prepared an oligomeric form via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET). Preliminary results on the poly-N,N'-diallyl-2,3,5,6-tetraketopiperazine oligomer show a sustained reversible capacity of 110 mAh/g at near 2.45 V. The insight gained from this work is the fact that two intracyclic nitrogen atoms or a lithiated ene-diolate functionality in the C6-based polyketone cyclic structure induces a similar tuning of the redox potential.
