Résumé : Sixteen years of ozone measurements (1992-2006) at Reunion Island (21°S, 55.5°E) have been processed to detect stratospheric signatures on each single ozone profile. The characterisation method consists in the advection of the potential vorticity (PV) over two to ten days of backtrajectory with the lagrangian trajectory code LACYTRAJ. LACYTRAJ is a Trajectory-Reverse Domain Filling code using the ERA40 ECMWF database and allowing the reconstruction of high resolution advected PV profiles. Correlation between high values of ozone mixing ratio and high PV is interpreted as a stratospheric signature. A climatology of STE events at Reunion has been derived and reveals that STE events occur more frequently during spring (SON) and summer (DJF). The method is tested for a set of PV threshold values (i.e. 1 PVU, 1.5 PVU and 2 PVU) and for a set of duration of backtrajectories (i.e. 2 days, 5 days and 10 days). The number of detected STE is sensitive to PV threshold values and duration criterions. For instance, the number of stratospheric intrusions detected in October with a 1.5 PVU criterion ranges between 25% (2 days of backtrajectories) and 56% (10 days of backtrajectories). The vertical distributions of STE show intrusions covering the whole free troposphere (between 7 and 15 km) and mainly located in the upper troposphere. Finally, results show that an important number of stratospheric intrusions are detected during spring and in the upper troposphere what points at the contribution of the stratospheric source to the tropospheric ozone spring maximum which is strongly influenced by the biomass burning emissions from South Africa and Madagascar.

Résumé : The paper proposes to integrate design and formal modelling approaches, based on MARTE, IF and CDL, to evaluate different possible uses and configurations of a data acquisition software component. The uses are related to actor's (sensor and application) behaviour and configurations are related to implementation parameterization. Evaluation considers safety and performance properties, delay evaluation, and are automatically evaluated by OBP tool. The work is illustrated via an example to show the impact of parameters and contextual use on software acquisition driver performances. Using this tool, it is possible to tune the driver's parameters to get the required performances, in term of delays, for a certain context use. The approach is applied to sensor monitoring applications.

Résumé : Powering future generations of implanted medical devices will require cumbersome transcutaneous energy transfer or harvesting energy from the human body. No functional solution that harvests power from the body is currently available, despite attempts to use the Seebeck thermoelectric effect, vibrations or body movements. Glucose fuel cells appear more promising, since they produce electrical energy from glucose and dioxygen, two substrates present in physiological fluids. The most powerful ones, Glucose BioFuel Cells (GBFCs), are based on enzymes electrically wired by redox mediators. However, GBFCs cannot be implanted in animals, mainly because the enzymes they rely on either require low pH or are inhibited by chloride or urate anions, present in the Extra Cellular Fluid (ECF). Here we present the first functional implantable GBFC, working in the retroperitoneal space of freely moving rats. The breakthrough relies on the design of a new family of GBFCs, characterized by an innovative and simple mechanical confinement of various enzymes and redox mediators: enzymes are no longer covalently bound to the surface of the electron collectors, which enables use of a wide variety of enzymes and redox mediators, augments the quantity of active enzymes, and simplifies GBFC construction. Our most efficient GBFC was based on composite graphite discs containing glucose oxidase and ubiquinone at the anode, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and quinone at the cathode. PPO reduces dioxygen into water, at pH 7 and in the presence of chloride ions and urates at physiological concentrations. This GBFC, with electrodes of 0.133 mL, produced a peak specific power of 24.4 microW mL(-1), which is better than pacemakers' requirements and paves the way for the development of a new generation of implantable artificial organs, covering a wide range of medical applications.

Résumé : BACKGROUND: Data on dementia from low- and middle-income countries are still necessary to quantify the burden of this condition. This multicenter cross-sectional study aimed at estimating the prevalence of dementia in 2 large cities of Central Africa. METHODS: General population door-to-door surveys were conducted in the districts of Bangui (Republic of Central Africa) and Brazzaville (Congo) in elderly aged ≥ 65 years. The subjects were screened with the Community Screening Interview for Dementia and the Five-Words Test. Diagnosis of dementia was made according to the DSM-IV criteria and to the clinical criteria proposed by the NINCDS-ADRDA for Alzheimer's disease. RESULTS: We enrolled 496 subjects in Bangui and 520 in Brazzaville. The prevalence of dementia was estimated at 8.1% (95% CI = 5.8-10.8) in Bangui and 6.7% (95% CI = 4.7-9.2) in Brazzaville. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of dementia in urban areas of Central Africa is close to those observed in high-income countries.

Résumé : The science of extra-solar planets is one of the most rapidly changing areas of astrophysics and since 1995 the number of planets known has increased by almost two orders of magnitude. A combination of ground-based surveys and dedicated space missions has resulted in 560-plus planets being detected, and over 1200 that await confirmation. NASA's Kepler mission has opened up the possibility of discovering Earth-like planets in the habitable zone around some of the 100,000 stars it is surveying during its 3 to 4-year lifetime. The new ESA's Gaia mission is expected to discover thousands of new planets around stars within 200 parsecs of the Sun. The key challenge now is moving on from discovery, important though that remains, to characterisation: what are these planets actually like, and why are they as they are? In the past ten years, we have learned how to obtain the first spectra of exoplanets using transit transmission and emission spectroscopy. With the high stability of Spitzer, Hubble, and large ground-based telescopes the spectra of bright close-in massive planets can be obtained and species like water vapour, methane, carbon monoxide and dioxide have been detected. With transit science came the first tangible remote sensing of these planetary bodies and so one can start to extrapolate from what has been learnt from Solar System probes to what one might plan to learn about their faraway siblings. As we learn more about the atmospheres, surfaces and near-surfaces of these remote bodies, we will begin to build up a clearer picture of their construction, history and suitability for life. The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory, EChO, will be the first dedicated mission to investigate the physics and chemistry of Exoplanetary Atmospheres. By characterising spectroscopically more bodies in different environments we will take detailed planetology out of the Solar System and into the Galaxy as a whole. EChO has now been selected by the European Space Agency to be assessed as one of four M3 mission candidates.

Résumé : The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence, viremia, genotype distribution, and demographic history of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the Republic of the Congo. Testing was carried out on sera samples collected in 2005 from 807 Bantus belonging to the Kongo, Teke, and Ngala subgroups and 80 Pygmies. Positive HCV serology was found in 50 (5.6%) individuals including31 (60%) who were viremic. Seroprevalence increased with age with a cutoff at 50 years:2.8% <50 versus 12% >50. Twenty-one strains belonged to four described subtypes, that is, 4c in eight cases, 4h in two, 4k in three, and 4r in eight. Ten strains could not be assigned to any known subtype and may represent six new variants, that is, subtype 4 in five cases and subtype 2 in one. Evolutionary analysis of subtype 4c and 4r sequences indicated a period of enhanced transmission in the mid-twentieth century probably due to iatrogenic causes. This study underlines the high genetic diversity of strains in the Republic of the Congo with nine subtypes 4 and one subtype 2.

Résumé : The project presented here and named HydroPêche aims to develop a tool for an automatic optimisation of trawl in order to minimize the drag of the gear. For that purpose, different aspects are studied in order: a/ to extend the basis of experimental data on flow characteristics governing the hydrodynamic behaviour of different porous structures ; b/ to develop numerical tools to simulate more realistic flow around porous structures taking into account fluid / structure interactions; c/ to develop automatic optimisation tools to design efficient trawls in terms of energy consumption. The developed tool should provide a substantial gain on the fuel consumed of actual fishing devices while maintaining a comparable fishing efficiency. The developments made will also be extended to study different types of porous structures used for fishing and aquaculture devices and to better understand the development of selectivity devices. Initial results have been achieved: some specific data analysis was carried out from PIV measurements around a cod-end, FreeFem ++ has been used to simulate the flow around a specific cod-end and the first developments of an automatic optimisation tool give good numerical results in terms of energy efficiency for both bottom and pelagic trawls.
