Résumé : Afin d’étudier l’effet d’une pression mécanique variable sur le contact électrique, un dispositif expérimental dédié a été mis au point. La résistance électrique de contact y est mesurée entre deux barreaux cylindriques croisés recouverts d’un film mince d’or. En dessous d’une centaine de mN, elle augmente rapidement lorsque la force de contact diminue. Un modèle de contact rugueux permet de rendre compte de cet effet de manière satisfaisante.

Résumé : We study models of a quadrotor UAV. These models include various aerodynamic effects of the propellers and their interactions with the motion of the rigid body of the UAV. Two main assumptions are formulated: the twisting of the propellers is such that the local angle of attack is constant along the blades in stationary flight, and, secondly, that the local induced velocity is also constant along the blades. Under these assumptions (which correspond to an optimal hovering rotor), we conclude that the flexibility of the propellers plays an important role in the dynamics of the UAV (including the effects of the vertical location of the center of gravity), and that it is interesting to account for it when designing a closed loop controller.

Résumé : —Anaerobic digestion is a wastewater treatment process where bacteria degrade an organic substrate and produce methane, which can be used as a biofuel. The first task when starting up an anaerobic digester is the increase of its microbial population. It is a delicate phase, which is still not well understood, and its influence on the digester's future performance is not well known. During this phase, we show that a competition between the various species occurs and finally some species become dominant. In this paper, extending the competitive exclusion principle, we propose to drive the competition during this start-up phase, by regulating the volatile fatty acids concentration, with the aim of selecting species with good performance in the standard operating mode of the process. This new "selective" start-up strategy should lead to more efficient ecosystems.

Résumé : Three strains of a hitherto unknown, Gram-negative staining, tiny, anaerobic coccus were collected from human clinical samples originating from skin and soft tissues. The three isolates displayed at least 99.9% identity in 16S rRNA gene sequences and more than 99.8% identity in dnaK gene sequences. The isolates were affiliated to the family Veillonellaceae, the coccobacillus Dialister micraerophilus being the most closely related species but with no more than 91.1% in 16S rRNA gene sequences. Phylogeny based on 16S rRNA gene confirmed that the three strains represent a novel and robust lineage within the current family Veillonellaceae. Similar genomic structure was demonstrated for the three isolates by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis-based analysis. Morphology and metabolic end products, as well as genotypic and phylogenetic data supported the proposal of the novel genus Negativicoccus gen. nov. with the novel species Negativicoccus succinicivorans sp. nov. (type strain ADV 07/08/06-B-1388T (= AIP 149.07T = CIP 109806T = DSM 21255 T = CCUG 56017T) as type species. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences of members of the phylum Firmicutes and other phyla indicated that the family Veillonellaceae formed a robust lineage clearly separated from those of the classes 'Bacilli', 'Clostridia', Thermolithobacteria and 'Erysipelotrichi' in the phylum Firmicutes. Therefore, we proposed that this family is a class-level taxon in the phylum Firmicutes, for which the name Negativicutes classis nov. is proposed, based on the Gram-negative type of cell wall of its members, with type order Selenomonadales ord. nov. In this order, a novel family, Acidaminococcacae fam. nov., is proposed and description of the family Veillonellaceae is emended.

Résumé : In osteoarthritis (OA), interleukin-1 (IL-1) stimulates the expression of metalloproteinases and aggrecanases, which induce cartilage degradation. IL-1 is also capable of reducing the production of cartilage-specific macromolecules, including type II collagen, through modulation of the transcription factors Sp1 and Sp3. Conversely, Transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-β) counteracts with most of the IL-1 deleterious effects and contributes to cartilage homeostasis. However, OA chondrocytes progressively loose the expression of TGF-β type II receptor and become insensitive to the factor. This downregulation is also driven by IL-1. This review provides insights into the molecular mechanisms that underly the interplay between IL-1 and TGF-β in OA cartilage metabolism and enlightens the central role of Sp1 and Sp3 transcription factors in the matrix pathological alterations.
