Résumé : Although there is strong evidence that genetic factors play a pathogenic role in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), few causal genes have been identified in humans. A number of studies, essentially in animal models, have suggested that disruption of the retinoid signaling pathway plays a major role in the pathogenesis of CDH. Our hypothesis is that human fetal skin fibroblasts express some metabolic and molecular actors of the retinoid pathway and that they offer convenient cellular material for investigating the molecular retinoid pathway defects associated with CDH.

Résumé : A laboratory-scale (401) reactor was designed to investigate dry anaerobic digestion. The reactor is equipped with an intermittent paddle mixer, enabling complete mixing in the reactor. Three consecutive batch dry digestion tests of municipal solid waste were performed under mesophilic conditions and compared to operation results obtained on a pilot-scale (21 m(3)) with the same feedstock. Biogas and methane production at the end of the tests were similar (around 200 m(3) CH4STP/tVS), and the dynamics of methane production and VFA accumulation concurred. However, the maximal levels of VFA transitory accumulation varied between reactors and between runs in a same reactor. Ammonia levels were similar in both reactors. These results show that the new reactor accurately imitates the conditions found in larger ones. Adaptation of micro-organisms to the waste and operating conditions was also pointed out along the consecutive batches.

Résumé : BACKGROUND: Weight change during chemotherapy is reported to be associated with a worse prognosis in breast cancer patients, both with weight gain and weight loss. However, most studies were conducted prior to the common use of anthracycline-base chemotherapy and on North American populations with a mean BMI classified as overweight. Our study was aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of weight change during anthracycline-based chemotherapy on non metastatic breast cancer (European population) with a long term follow-up. METHODS: Patients included 111 women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and locally advanced breast cancer who have been treated by anthracycline-based chemotherapy regimen between 1976 and 1989. The relative percent weight variation (WV) between baseline and postchemotherapy treatment was calculated and categorized into either weight change (WV > 5%) or stable (WV < 5%). The median follow-up was 20.4 years [19.4 - 27.6]. Cox proportional hazard models were used to evaluate any potential association of weight change and known prognostic factors with the time to recurrence and overall survival. RESULTS: Baseline BMI was 24.4 kg/m2 [17.1 - 40.5]. During chemotherapy treatment, 31% of patients presented a notable weight variation which was greater than 5% of their initial weight.In multivariate analyses, weight change (> 5%) was positively associated with an increased risk of both recurrence (RR 2.28; 95% CI: 1.29-4.03) and death (RR 2.11; 95% CI: 1.21-3.66). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that weight change during breast-cancer chemotherapy treatment may be related to poorer prognosis with higher recurrence and higher mortality in comparison to women who maintained their weight.

Résumé : P>Seeds play a fundamental role in colonization of the environment by spermatophytes, and seeds harvested from crops are the main food source for human beings. Knowledge of seed biology is therefore important for both fundamental and applied issues. This review on seed biology illustrates the important progress made in the field of Arabidopsis seed research over the last decade. Access to 'omics' tools, including the inventory of genes deduced from sequencing of the Arabidopsis genome, has speeded up the analysis of biological functions operating in seeds. This review covers the following processes: seed and seed coat development, seed reserve accumulation, seed dormancy and seed germination. We present new insights in these various fields and describe ongoing biotechnology approaches to improve seed characteristics in crops.

Résumé : In addition to pressure and temperature effects, shear strain has been proposed to play an important role in the initiation and decomposition mechanisms of energetic materials. To study the effect of shear strain in more detail, a shear diamond anvil cell has been developed. In this paper, we present a Raman spectroscopy study of the effects of shear strain on the high-pressure behaviour of nitromethane (NM). Two major effects are observed in our experiments. The first one is a lowering of the pressures at which the different structural modifications of NM occur. The second one is observed at 28 GPa, where the sample decomposes suddenly just after shear application. Examination of the black residue showed that it is composed of carbon, as indicated by the Raman spectrum.

Résumé : Various natural organic film-making media from several chemical families have been used as varnishes. An improvement in the identification of these materials by the combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopies is here presented. Fourteen unaged reference samples representative of resins, glues, gums and oils were analyzed. FT-Raman and IR spectra were all compared in order to discriminate the different classes of organic media by considering their spectroscopic features. It led to a flowchart for material discrimination based on simple, notable and specific criteria. It appears that the different families (gums, glues, oils and resins) and subfamilies (di/triterpenoids resins) are easily differentiated thanks to their specific structural composition. However, discerning between compounds from a same subgroup, for example diterpenoid resins, could be ambiguous because the spectra depend on the sample aspect, age and degradations.
