Résumé : This paper describes mainly the experiments that have been conducted by the MRIM group at the LIG in Grenoble for the the ImageCLEF 2009 campaign, focusing on the work done for the Robotvision task. The proposal for this task is to study the behaviour of a generative approach inspired by the language model of information retrieval. To fit with the specificity of the Robotvi- sion task, we added post-processing in a way to tackle with the fact that images do belong only to several classes (rooms) and that image are not independent from each others (i.e., the robot cannot in one second be in three different rooms). The results obtained still need improvement, but the use of such language model in the case of Robotvision is showed. Some results related to the Image Retrieval task and the Image annotation task are also presented.

Résumé : The existing literature in expert-customer relationship concludes that when: i) consumers are homogenous, ii) consumers are committed with an an expert once this one made a recommendation, and iii) the type of treatment provided is verifiable, an expert finds optimal to serve efficiently his customers. This work shows that the previous result may not occur when consumers are not risk-neutral. Our result, that holds in a monopoly setting and under Bertrand competition, suggests that risk averse consumers have more likely to be mistreated by experts.

Résumé : This study investigates the synoptic variability of the monsoon flux during the establishment of the West African monsoon using observations and ECMWF analyses. It highlights variability at a 3-5-day time scale, characterized by successive northward excursions of the monsoon flux. Their characteristics and climatology prior to the monsoon onset are presented. These penetrations follow a maximum of intensity of the heat-low (extension and minimum of pressure) and are concomitant with an acceleration of the low-level meridional wind. Some penetrations are stationary whereas others propagate westward simultaneously with African easterly waves. Both types are investigated in more detail by case-studies. This enables us to distinguish the boundary-layer mechanisms involved in such penetrations. A similar conceptual model holds for both. It is argued that the heat-low dynamics is a major driver of these synoptic penetrations, pointing to the predominantly continental nature of this phenomenon. In turn, the heat-low can be partitioned by the penetrations. Horizontal advection is the main process that eventually accounts for these surges; nevertheless, turbulent mixing also plays a significant role by vertically redistributing moisture, and in more subtle ways by its contribution to the shaping of the low-level synoptic environment within which the surges take place

Résumé : How information is transformed along synaptic processing stages is critically important to understand the neural basis of behavior in any sensory system. In moths, males rely on sex pheromone to find their mating partner. It is essential for a male to recognize the components present in a pheromone blend, their ratio, and the temporal pattern of the signal. To examine pheromone processing mechanisms at different levels of the olfactory pathway, we performed single-cell recordings of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in the antenna and intracellular recordings of central neurons in the macroglomerular complex (MGC) of the antennal lobe of sexually mature Agrotis ipsilon male moths, using the same pheromone stimuli, stimulation protocol, and response analyses. Detailed characteristics of the ORN and MGC-neuron responses were compared to describe the transformation of the neuronal responses that takes place in the MGC. Although the excitatory period of the response is similar in both neuron populations, the addition of an inhibitory phase following the MGC neuron excitatory phase indicates participation of local interneurons (LN), which remodel the ORN input. Moreover, MGC neurons showed a wider tuning and a higher sensitivity to single pheromone components than ORNs.

Résumé : Ce rapport présente les résultats préliminaires des travaux de terrain de la mission archéologique syro-française de Ras Shamra – Ougarit pour les campagnes de 2007 et 2008 qui se sont déroulées à Ras Shamra et sur plusieurs sites côtiers. Sur le tell de Ras Shamra, quatre opérations de fouilles ont été menées : la poursuite du chantier du « Rempart » et de celui de la « Grand-rue », la reprise du dégagement du « pont-barrage » sur le Nahr ed-Delbé et un nouveau chantier conjoint dans le secteur du « Temple de Dagan ». Deux autres opérations ont commencé en 2008 : la prospection géomagnétique du tell et l’étude des techniques de taille de la pierre à Ougarit. Les travaux de la mission se sont portés également sur les sites côtiers du royaume d’Ougarit dans le cadre d’un nouveau programme conjoint visant à reconstituer l’évolution des paléo-environnements portuaires et la mobilité des paysages littoraux. La présentation des activités de terrain est complétée par une réflexion sur le plan de l’antique cité d’Ougarit et les premiers résultats de l’étude d’un atelier de travail du silex (Bronze récent final) mis au jour dans le chantier « Grand-rue ».

Résumé : The response of insect olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) to odorants involves the opening of Ca2+-permeable channels, generating an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Here, we studied the downstream effect of this Ca2+ rise in cultured ORNs of the moth Spodoptera littoralis. Intracellular dialysis of Ca2+ from the patch pipette in whole-cell patch-clamp configuration activated a conductance with a K-1/2 of 2.8 mu M. Intracellular and extracellular anionic and cationic substitutions demonstrated that Cl- carries this current. The anion permeability sequence I- > NO3- > Br- > Cl- > CH3SO(3)(-) >> gluconate(-) of the Ca2+-activated Cl- channel suggests a weak electrical field pore of the channel. The Ca2+-activated current partly inactivated over time and did not depend on protein kinase C (PKC) and CaMKII activity or on calmodulin. Application of Cl- channel blockers, flufenamic acid, 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino) benzoic acid, or niflumic acid reversibly blocked the Ca2+-activated current. In addition, lowering Cl- concentration in the sensillar lymph bathing the ORN outer dendrites caused a significant delay in pheromone response termination in vivo. The present work identifies a new Cl- conductance activated by Ca2+ in insect ORNs presumably required for ORN repolarization.
