Résumé : Abstract Ester‐way to heaven : Unexpected formation of bicyclo[3.1.0]hexene 4 was the main focus of combined experimental and theoretical studies on the Au‐catalyzed cycloisomerization of branched dienyne 1 (see scheme), which provided better understanding of the mechanistic details governing the cyclization of enynes bearing a propargylic ester group. magnified image Experimental and theoretical studies on Au‐ and Pt‐catalyzed cycloisomerization of a branched dienyne with an acetate group at the propargylic position are presented. The peculiar architecture of the dienyne precursor, which has both a 1,6‐ and a 1,5‐enyne skeleton, leads, in the presence of alkynophilic gold catalysts, to mixtures of bicyclic compounds 3 , 4 , and 5 . Formation of unprecedented bicyclo[3.1.0]hexene 5 is the main focus of this study. The effect of the ancillary ligand on the gold center was examined and found to be crucial for formation of 5 . Further mechanistic studies, involving cyclization of an enantioenriched dienyne precursor, 18 O‐labeling experiments, and DFT calculations, allowed an unprecedented reaction pathway to be proposed. We show that bicyclo[3.1.0]hexene 5 is likely formed by a 1,3‐OAc shift/allene–ene cyclization/1,2‐OAc shift sequence, as calculated by DFT and supported by Au‐catalyzed cyclization of isolated allenenyl acetate 7 , which leads to improved selectivity in the formation of 5 . Additionally, the possibility of OAc migration from allenyl acetates was supported by a trapping experiment with styrene that afforded the corresponding cyclopropane derivative. This unprecedented generation of a vinyl metal carbene from an allenyl ester supports a facile enynyl ester/allenenyl ester equilibrium. Further examination of the difference in reactivity between enynyl acetates and their corresponding [3,3]‐rearranged allenenyl acetates toward Au‐ and Pt‐catalyzed cycloisomerization is also presented.

Résumé : A “complex system” is in general any system comprised of a great number of heterogeneous entities, among which local interactions create multiple levels of collective structure and organization. Examples include natural systems ranging from bio-molecules and living cells to human social systems and the ecosphere, as well as sophisticated artificial systems such as the Internet, power grid or any large-scale distributed software system. A unique feature of complex systems, generally overlooked by traditional science, is the emergence of non-trivial superstructures which often dominate the system's behaviour and cannot be easily traced back to the properties of the constituent entities. Not only do higher emergent features of complex systems arise from lower-level interactions, but the global patterns that they create affect in turn these lower levels — a feedback loop sometimes called immergence. In many cases, complex systems possess striking properties of robustness against various large-scale and potentially disruptive perturbations. They have an inherent capacity to adapt and maintain their stability. Because complex systems require analysis at many different spatial and temporal scales, scientists face radically new challenges when trying to observe complex systems, in learning how to describe them effectively, and in developing original theories of their behaviour and control. The aim of this roadmap is to identify a set of wide thematic domains for complex systems research over the next five years. Each domain is organized around a specific question or topic and proposes a relevant set of “grand challenges”, i.e., clearly identifiable problems whose solution would stimulate significant progress in both theoretical methods and experimental strategies.

Résumé : Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of glycolide was studied in melt conditions and in the presence of two different initiators: 1-dodecanol and 1,4-butanediol and tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate as catalyst. Its subsequent polymerization provided poly (glycolic acid) with controlled molar masses ranging from 2000 to 42,000 g/mol with well-defined structures characterized by NMR. Their thermal properties were evaluated by DSC analysis, and a glass transition temperature at infinite molar mass (T-g infinity) of 44.8 degrees C was thus calculated. From rheological data, the critical molar mass for entanglement, Me, was estimated to be near 11,000 g/mol. Furthermore, in situ polymerizations were also performed between the plates of the rheometer within a same temperature range from 210 to 235 degrees C. The variation of the storage and loss moduli during the polymerization step have been monitored by time sweep oscillatory experiments under an angular frequency omega = 10 rad/s. Finally, the development of an inverse rheological method allowed to calculate the bulk polymerization kinetics in the temperature range 200-230 degrees C. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Résumé : Masting is the intermittent production of large seed crops by a population of plants. Two main hypotheses have been proposed to explain masting. Variations in seed crop may result from stochastic climate factors (temperature, rainfall, etc.), and/or masting may be a plant evolutionary strategy to avoid specific seed predators. To determine the effect of climate on the annual pattern of cone production in the European larch (Larix decidua), we analyzed larch cone production from 1975 to 2005 at 20 sites in the French Alps, ranging from 1,300 to 2,100 m a.s.l. (on average 17 years per site were sampled). We examined the effects of mast seeding on the predation of larch cones by the dominant specific pre-dispersal seed predators, cone fly Strobilomyia spp. Larch cone production varied across the years and was spatially synchronized throughout the region. We constructed two models to explain seed production, one for sites at low (< 1,800 m) and one for sites at high (a parts per thousand yen1,800 m) altitudes, using partial least squares (PLS) regressions to detect across a large number of climate indices (306) the factors which best explain cone production. Monthly indices were more accurate descriptors than 4-month period indices. The predation rate was lower in high cone production years that followed low production years, supporting the predator satiation hypothesis. However, variable cone production explained only a small part of predation rates (45 and 25% at low and high altitudes, respectively). Predation was also directly affected by climate conditions. PLS regressions taking into account both cone production and climate factors accounted for as much as 68 and 82% of the predation rate variation at low and high altitudes, respectively. This study contributes to a better understanding of how climate factors differently affect the members of an interacting community.

Résumé : In this paper, we address the problem of robustly recovering several instances of a curve model from a single noisy data set with outliers. Using M-estimators revisited in a Lagrangian formalism, we derive an algorithm that we call Simultaneous Multiple Robust Fitting (SMRF), which extends the classical Iterative Reweighted Least Squares algorithm (IRLS). Compared to the IRLS, it features an extra probability ratio, which is classical in clustering algorithms, in the expression of the weights. Potential numerical issues are tackled by banning zero probabilities in the computation of the weights and by introducing a Gaussian prior on curves coefficients. Applications to camera calibration and lane-markings tracking show the effectiveness of the SMRF algorithm, which outperforms classical Gaussian mixture model algorithms in the presence of outliers.

Résumé : The plasma level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is known to be inversely associated with cardiovascular risk. However, besides lifestyle, gene polymorphism may influence the HDL-C concentration. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of interactions between CETP, PPARA, APOE, and APOAI polymorphisms and HDL-C, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I, lipoprotein (Lp) A-I, and Lp A-I:A-II in a sample selected from the Prospective Epidemiological Study of Myocardial Infarction (PRIME) study population who remained free of cardiovascular events over 5 years of follow-up. Healthy individuals (857) were randomly selected for genotyping the PRIME study subjects. The population was selected so as to provide 25% of subjects in the lowest tertile of HDL-C (< or = 28 mg/dL) in the whole PRIME study sample, 25% of subjects in the highest tertile of HDL-C (> or = 73 mg/dL), and 50% of subjects in the medium tertile of HDL-C (28-73 mg/dL). Genotyping was performed by using a polymerase chain reaction system with predeveloped TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. The CETP A373P rare allele c was less frequent in the group of subjects with high HDL-C, apo A-I, Lp A-I, and Lp A-I:A-II concentrations. Apolipoprotein A-I and Lp A-I were also found to be higher in the presence of the epsilon2 allele coding for APOE. The effect of the CETP A373P rare allele c on HDL-C was independent of all tested parameters except triglycerides. The respective effect of these polymorphisms and triglycerides on cardiovascular risk should be evaluated prospectively.

Résumé : There is wide acknowledgement that apathy is an important behavioural syndrome in Alzheimer's disease and in various neuropsychiatric disorders. In light of recent research and the renewed interest in the correlates and impacts of apathy, and in its treatments, it is important to develop criteria for apathy that will be widely accepted, have clear operational steps, and that will be easily applied in practice and research settings. Meeting these needs is the focus of the task force work reported here. The task force includes members of the Association Française de Psychiatrie Biologique, the European Psychiatric Association, the European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium and experts from Europe, Australia and North America. An advanced draft was discussed at the consensus meeting (during the EPA conference in April 7th 2008) and a final agreement reached concerning operational definitions and hierarchy of the criteria. Apathy is defined as a disorder of motivation that persists over time and should meet the following requirements. Firstly, the core feature of apathy, diminished motivation, must be present for at least four weeks; secondly two of the three dimensions of apathy (reduced goal-directed behaviour, goal-directed cognitive activity, and emotions) must also be present; thirdly there should be identifiable functional impairments attributable to the apathy. Finally, exclusion criteria are specified to exclude symptoms and states that mimic apathy.
