Résumé : Tailoring the properties of carbon nanotubes by functionalizing their side-wall is one of the key challenges towards the realization of carbon nanotube-based optoelectronic devices. This technique aims at combining the remarkable transport properties of the tube with the versatility of the optical properties of organic molecules. Herein, we achieve p-stacking functionalization of nanotubes with hydrosoluble porphyrins.

Résumé : Since 2003, Center-West and South-West of France are regularly affected by drought events (either edaphic or hydrologic) with dramatic consequences on yield, irrigation water use and farmer’s net income. To cope with drought and irrigation water shortage, different strategies are available : (i) fitting water offer to agricultural demand through the mobilisation of new resources ; (ii) fitting water demand to resource offer by genetic, agronomic, regulatory, and socio-economic measures ; (iii) developing local and participative water management programs ; (iv) compensating production or income losses through public subsidies or private insurance systems. In this communication, we present some conclusions drawn from the recent scientific joint expertise conducted by INRA on “Drought and Agriculture” in 2006. Case studies from Poitou-Charentes and Midi-Pyrénées regions were selected.

Résumé : Simbol-X is a hard X-ray mission, operating in the ˜ 0.5-80 keV range, proposed as a collaboration between the French and Italian space agencies with participation of German laboratories for a launch in 2013. Relying on two spacecrafts in a formation flying configuration, Simbol-X uses for the first time a 20 m focal length X-ray mirror to focus X-rays with energy above 10 keV, resulting in over two orders of magnitude improvement in angular resolution and sensitivity in the hard X-ray range with respect to non-focusing techniques. The Simbol-X revolutionary instrumental capabilities will allow to elucidate outstanding questions in high energy astrophysics such as those related to black-holes accretion physics and census, and to particle acceleration mechanisms. Simbol-X has been selected for a phase A study which is jointly conducted by CNES and ASI. We give in this paper a general overview of the mission, as consolidated close to the end of the phase A.

Résumé : The FFCD 9402 multicentre phase III trial was designed to compare the effects of the combination of Transarterial Lipiodol Chemoembolisation (TACE) and tamoxifen with tamoxifen alone on overall survival and quality of life in the palliative treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis. From 1995 to 2002, 138 patients were randomised between the two groups. One hundred and twenty three patients were eligible including 61 in the Tamoxifen group and 62 in the TACE group. Baseline characteristics were similar: Child-Pugh class A: 70%, alcoholic cirrhosis: 76%, Okuda stage I: 71%, multinodular tumour: 70% and segmental portal vein thrombosis: 10%. At 2 years, the overall survival was 22% and 25% in the Tamoxifen and TACE groups (P = .68), respectively. Multivariate analysis identified four independent prognostic factors for survival: α-fetoprotein (AFP) > 400 ng/mL (P = .008), abdominal pain (P = .011), hepatomegaly (P = .023) and Child-Pugh score (P = .032). The Spitzer Index level assessing the quality of life during follow-up did not differ between the two groups (P = .70). Amongst patients with stage Okuda I, the 2-year overall survival was 28% in the Tamoxifen group and 32% in the TACE group (P = .58). In this subgroup, two prognostic factors were statistically significant for survival: AFP > 400 ng/mL (P = .004) and Spitzer Index (P = .013) as shown by multivariable analysis. In conclusion, this study suggests that TACE improves neither the survival nor the quality of life in patients with HCC and cirrhosis.

Résumé : Several studies suggest that (n-3) PUFA may play a role in the regulation of cognitive functions, locomotor and exploratory activity, and affective disorders. Additionally, (n-3) PUFA affect pineal function, which is implicated in the sleep-wake rhythm. However, no studies to our knowledge have explored the role of PUFA on the circadian system. We investigated the effect of an (n-3) PUFA-deficient diet on locomotor and pineal melatonin rhythms in Syrian hamsters used as model species in circadian rhythm research. To assess the possible relationship between voluntary wheel running activity and dopaminergic neurotransmission, we also measured endogenous monoamine concentrations in the striatum. Two-month-old male hamsters, fed either an (n-3) PUFA-deficient or an (n-3) PUFA-adequate diet, were housed individually in cages equipped with run wheels. At 3 mo, cerebral structures were extracted for biochemical and cellular analysis. In (n-3) PUFA-deficient hamsters, the induced changes in the pineal PUFA membrane phospholipid composition were associated with a reduction in the nocturnal peak level of melatonin that was 52% lower than in control hamsters (P < 0.001). The (n-3) PUFA-deficient hamsters also had higher diurnal (P < 0.01) and nocturnal (P = 0.001) locomotor activity than the control hamsters, in parallel with activation of striatal dopaminergic function (P < 0.05). The (n-3) PUFA-deficient hamsters exhibited several symptoms: chronic locomotor hyperactivity, disturbance in melatonin rhythm, and striatal hyperdopaminergia. We suggest that an (n-3) PUFA-deficient diet lessens the melatonin rhythm, weakens endogenous functioning of the circadian clock, and plays a role in nocturnal sleep disturbances as described in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Résumé : The fluorescence and phosphorescence properties of Europium-doped MAl2Si2O8 (M=Ca, Sr, Ba) are reinvestigated and discussed on the basis of the propensity of an activator to agglomerate with an oxygen vacancy. Due to a stronger attraction of the anion vacancy towards Eu2+ cations going from BaAl2Si2O8 to SrAl2Si2O8 and CaAl2Si2O8 host lattices, the interpretation of the fluorescence spectra turns out to be less trivial in the Ca and Sr host lattices than in the Ba one and requests the account for Eu2+ cations lying at alkaline-earth sites with or without vacancy in their neighborhood. Phosphorescence in these compounds is highlighted.

Résumé : Amorphous silica coatings have been deposited by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) process on M2 steel and 304 stainless steel substrates. The chemical inertia of the coating has been established by resonant quartz crystal microbalance (RQCM), and no porosity has been observed at the AFM scale. The barrier effect has been evaluated on M2 steel by applying the concept of dipolar relaxation. The protection is very efficient, and no deleterious galvanic coupling with the uncoated metallic surface can occur. A coated stainless steel was also investigated in NaCl solution in order to understand how the passive properties are influenced by such a barrier coating. When deposited on stainless steel, coated part keeps the beneficial passive behaviour inherent to the substrate. They evidence almost no corrosion. The silica based layer behaves as a quasi perfect dielectric. The corrosion rate is then greatly reduced, and the pitting resistance is improved. The excellent localized corrosion protection has been explained by a tiny porosity rate, and a limited access of chloride ions through open pores.
