Résumé : New substituted trichostatic acid derivatives have been synthesized and evaluated for their biological activities towards the H661 non-small lung cancer cell line. These syntheses were achieved by alkylation of propiophenones to introduce the side chain with a terminal precursor of hydroxamic acid and aminobenzamide derivatives. The first fluorinated derivatives of trichostatic acid are described, such as 6-fluoro trichostatin A, with antiproliferative activities in the micromolar range and with histone deacetylase inhibitory activity.

Résumé : Star-shaped molecules consisting of short-chain oligothiophenes attached onto an electron acceptor triazine core have been synthesized. Results of the analysis of the electronic properties of these compounds by UV–vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry are used to discuss the impact of the electron-withdrawing node on the properties of the compounds. The electrochemical oxidation of some of these systems into the corresponding electroactive polymers is briefly discussed.

Résumé : In synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease, partially ubiquitylated alpha-synuclein species phosphorylated on serine 129 (P(S129)-alpha-synuclein) accumulate abnormally. Parkin, an ubiquitin-protein ligase that is dysfunctional in autosomal recessive parkinsonism, protects against alpha-synuclein-mediated toxicity in various models.We analyzed the effects of Parkin deficiency in a mouse model of synucleinopathy to explore the possibility that Parkin and alpha-synuclein act in the same biochemical pathway. Whether or not Parkin was present, these mice developed an age-dependent neurodegenerative disorder preceded by a progressive decline in performance in tasks predictive of sensorimotor dysfunction. The symptoms were accompanied by the deposition of P(S129)-alpha-synuclein but not P(S87)-alpha-synuclein in neuronal cell bodies and neuritic processes throughout the brainstem and the spinal cord; activation of caspase 9 was observed in 5% of the P(S129)-alpha-synuclein-positive neurons. As in Lewy bodies, ubiquitin-immunoreactivity, albeit less abundant, was invariably co-localized with P(S129)-alpha-synuclein. During late disease stages, the disease-specific neuropathological features revealed by ubiquitin- and P(S129)-alpha-synuclein-specific antibodies were similar in mice with or without Parkin. However, the proportion of P(S129)-alpha-synuclein-immunoreactive neuronal cell bodies and neurites co-stained for ubiquitin was lower in the absence than in the presence of Parkin, suggesting less advanced synucleinopathy. Moreover, sensorimotor impairment and manifestation of the neurodegenerative phenotype due to overproduction of human alpha-synuclein were significantly delayed in Parkin-deficient mice.These findings raise the possibility that effective compensatory mechanisms modulate the phenotypic expression of disease in parkin-related parkinsonism.

Résumé : Sheet nacre is a natural biocomposite with a multiscale structure including a mineral phase of calcium carbonate (97 wt.%) and two organic matrices (3 wt.%). The mineral phase is constituted by an arrangement of CaCO3 biocrystal nanograins (ca 40 nm in size) drowned in an ‘‘intracrystalline'' organic matrix (4 nm thick) in order to form a microsized flat organomineral aragonite platelet. These platelets are themselves surrounded by an ‘‘intercrystalline'' organic matrix (40 nm thick) building up a very tough materials. This microarchitecture referred to as ‘‘bricks and mortar'' nacre structure, is mainly studied for the creation of new organic/inorganic hybrid materials. Currently, only little is known about the nacre mechanical behaviour under dynamical loading and more particularly under tribological conditions which involve shocks and thermal effects simultaneously. This paper brings out the thermal-induced damage mechanisms effect on the wear of sheet nacre by the assessment of the thermal component of the friction with a scanning thermal microscope. Results reveal that the mean contact pressure is the main driving force involved in the degradation of the organic constituents. For the lowest mean contact pressure (\0.4 MPa), wear is rather weak because the friction-induced thermal component is not sufficient for degrading the organic matrices. In contrast, beyond 0.4 MPa, the friction-induced contact temperature rises up over the melting point of the organic matrices, and may even reach the temperature of the aragonite– calcite phase transformation increasing dramatically the wear of sheet nacre.

Résumé : Geodetic time-series from continuous GPS (cGPS) and 1 DORIS stations across the Himalaya of central Nepal show strong seasonal fluctuations observed on the horizontal and vertical components. Because the fluctuations determined at the different stations have similar phase but different amplitudes, these observations would imply that the secular shortening across the range is modulated by a seasonal strain. Given the geographic and climatic setting, there is however a possibility that the GPS positions be biased by tropospheric effects. We process these data using two different software packages and two different analysis strategies. Our analysis shows evidence for 1-strong seasonal fluctuation of zenithal delays consistent with in situ meteorological data and two strong horizontal tropospheric gradients in particular in the EW direction, that is, parallel to the mountain front at Gumba, also detected in DORIS results. We show that the tropospheric effects cannot however be the source of the observed seasonality of horizontal strain. This study supports the view that the seasonal strain in the Himalaya is real and probably driven by seasonal surface load variations. Our study adds support to the view that seasonal variations of seismicity in the Himalaya reflects seasonal variations of geodetic strain.

Résumé : Our knowledge of the response of phytoplankton to climate change is restricted by the lack of phytoplankton long-term studies, especially those reporting species data. To circumvent this problem, we combined recent data from sampling at monitoring sites with old bibliographic data. The study was conducted on the genus Ceratium (planktonic dinoflagellates) in the NW Mediterranean, as numerous studies have been conducted in the area since the beginning of the 20th century. In addition, species of this highly diverse genus are known to be particularly sensitive to water temperature, and should thus be responsive to global warming. The temporal distribution of Ceratium species over the last century showed a progressive disappearance from the surface layer of likely stenothermic species, which may have moved to deeper layers in response to water warming, along with a decrease of species richness during the annual cycle. Seasonal and phenological aspects of Ceratium assemblages were also affected, as illustrated by the earlier timing in the minimum of richness. A change in the overall species assemblage also occurred from past to present in the Ligurian Sea, suggesting a warming in this area consistent with the development in surface water temperatures. Our results suggest that Ceratium species may constitute good biological indicators of warming in the NW Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the present study showed the importance of time-series data and the value of historical literature as the basis for ecological studies of long-term trends needed to substantiate our current understanding of the impact of global change on marine biodiversity.
