Résumé : Sustainability of Eucalyptus plantations is often questioned in resource-limited environments, especially in areas characterized by soils with poor nutrient and water holding capacities. Yet, field-based observations of fine root dynamics in relation with the seasonality of rainfall are lacking. This study was undertaken on two Eucalyptus stands planted in the Kouilou Region (south-western Congo), which is characterized by a four-monthlong dry season. Fine root (less than 2 mm in diameter) dynamics were studied using rhizotron observations of root elongation in the field. Fine root elongation rates displayed a seasonal variation in the two stands, with higher elongation rates during the rainy season than during the dry season. Positive and significant correlations were found between fine root elongation rates and soil water content at all depths, but a better correlation was found with soil water content in the deep soil horizon than in the superficial horizons. These results suggest that the temporal variations in fine root elongation were related to the seasonality of rainfall, and they were probably associate with seasonal changes in tree water status, carbon assimilation and belowground allocation.

Résumé : This report contains a formal specification of the Fractal component model using the Alloy specification language. The report covers all the elements of the (informal) reference specification of the Fractal model. It provides a truly language-independent specification of the Fractal model, and lifts the ambiguities of the reference specification.

Résumé : After the demonstration that no Châtelperronian/Aurignacian interstratifications existed at Roc-de-Combe, Le Piage, and El Pendo, the Grotte des Fées remained the single instance conceivably documenting the putative longterm regional contemporaneity of the two technocomplexes which is required by the “acculturation” and “imitation” models of the innovations (ornaments, decorated bone tools) that characterize the Châtelperronian. Based on our own inspection and study of the lithic and faunal collections and of the site itself, on consideration of the published and unpublished literature, and on the available dating evidence, we show that the putative interstratified deposits reported by Henri Delporte, who last excavated at the Grotte des Fées in 1951–54 and 1962, are in fact 19th-century backfill. In situ remnants may have been found in 1962, but, in the part of the site excavated at that time, Delporte failed to recognize the previously described interstratification. The stratigraphic consistency of 10 (out of the 13) radiocarbon dates available relates to the fact that those 10 dates are on samples from the conceivably in situ remnants excavated in 1962. Three samples from Level B5 date the Châtelperronian occupation to ca 39–40,000 14C BP, while seven samples from Level B1–3 relate to carnivore denning at the site throughout the ca 36,500–34,500 14C BP interval. Subsequent sporadic incursions by bearers of an Aurignacian I tool-kit are documented by diagnostic material scattered from top to bottom of the backfill deposits excavated by Delporte between 1951 and 1954. Originally, that Aurignacian material must have been contained in a surficial occupation lens capping the site's Mousterian-to-Châtelperronian stratigraphic succession.

Résumé : Several studies suggest that (n-3) PUFA may play a role in the regulation of cognitive functions, locomotor and exploratory activity, and affective disorders. Additionally, (n-3) PUFA affect pineal function, which is implicated in the sleep-wake rhythm. However, no studies to our knowledge have explored the role of PUFA on the circadian system. We investigated the effect of an (n-3) PUFA-deficient diet on locomotor and pineal melatonin rhythms in Syrian hamsters used as model species in circadian rhythm research. To assess the possible relationship between voluntary wheel running activity and dopaminergic neurotransmission, we also measured endogenous monoamine concentrations in the striatum. Two-month-old male hamsters, fed either an (n-3) PUFA-deficient or an (n-3) PUFA-adequate diet, were housed individually in cages equipped with run wheels. At 3 mo, cerebral structures were extracted for biochemical and cellular analysis. In (n-3) PUFA-deficient hamsters, the induced changes in the pineal PUFA membrane phospholipid composition were associated with a reduction in the nocturnal peak level of melatonin that was 52% lower than in control hamsters (P < 0.001). The (n-3) PUFA-deficient hamsters also had higher diurnal (P < 0.01) and nocturnal (P = 0.001) locomotor activity than the control hamsters, in parallel with activation of striatal dopaminergic function (P < 0.05). The (n-3) PUFA-deficient hamsters exhibited several symptoms: chronic locomotor hyperactivity, disturbance in melatonin rhythm, and striatal hyperdopaminergia. We suggest that an (n-3) PUFA-deficient diet lessens the melatonin rhythm, weakens endogenous functioning of the circadian clock, and plays a role in nocturnal sleep disturbances as described in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Résumé : The FFCD 9402 multicentre phase III trial was designed to compare the effects of the combination of Transarterial Lipiodol Chemoembolisation (TACE) and tamoxifen with tamoxifen alone on overall survival and quality of life in the palliative treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis. From 1995 to 2002, 138 patients were randomised between the two groups. One hundred and twenty three patients were eligible including 61 in the Tamoxifen group and 62 in the TACE group. Baseline characteristics were similar: Child-Pugh class A: 70%, alcoholic cirrhosis: 76%, Okuda stage I: 71%, multinodular tumour: 70% and segmental portal vein thrombosis: 10%. At 2 years, the overall survival was 22% and 25% in the Tamoxifen and TACE groups (P = .68), respectively. Multivariate analysis identified four independent prognostic factors for survival: α-fetoprotein (AFP) > 400 ng/mL (P = .008), abdominal pain (P = .011), hepatomegaly (P = .023) and Child-Pugh score (P = .032). The Spitzer Index level assessing the quality of life during follow-up did not differ between the two groups (P = .70). Amongst patients with stage Okuda I, the 2-year overall survival was 28% in the Tamoxifen group and 32% in the TACE group (P = .58). In this subgroup, two prognostic factors were statistically significant for survival: AFP > 400 ng/mL (P = .004) and Spitzer Index (P = .013) as shown by multivariable analysis. In conclusion, this study suggests that TACE improves neither the survival nor the quality of life in patients with HCC and cirrhosis.

Résumé : Simbol-X is a hard X-ray mission, operating in the ˜ 0.5-80 keV range, proposed as a collaboration between the French and Italian space agencies with participation of German laboratories for a launch in 2013. Relying on two spacecrafts in a formation flying configuration, Simbol-X uses for the first time a 20 m focal length X-ray mirror to focus X-rays with energy above 10 keV, resulting in over two orders of magnitude improvement in angular resolution and sensitivity in the hard X-ray range with respect to non-focusing techniques. The Simbol-X revolutionary instrumental capabilities will allow to elucidate outstanding questions in high energy astrophysics such as those related to black-holes accretion physics and census, and to particle acceleration mechanisms. Simbol-X has been selected for a phase A study which is jointly conducted by CNES and ASI. We give in this paper a general overview of the mission, as consolidated close to the end of the phase A.

Résumé : We present a theoretical model for the propagation of non-self-interacting atom laser beams. We start from a general propagation integral equation and we use the same approximations as in photon optics to derive tools to calculate the atom-laser-beam propagation. We discuss the approximations that allow one to reduce the general equation whether to a Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral calculated by using the stationary phase method, or to the eikonal. Within the paraxial approximation, we also introduce the ABCD matrices formalism and the beam quality factor. As an example, we apply these tools to analyze the recent experiment.
