Résumé : OBJECTIVES: To assess audiological performance, satisfaction rate, and side effects of 100 patients who have been using the middle ear implant Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) for 5 to 8 yr when compared with data collected from 3 to 18 mo postsurgery. DESIGN: Audiological testing and subjective evaluation using self-assessment scales were performed in 77 out of the 100 patients using the VSB for 5 to 8 years. The results were compared to data collected 3 months (audiological testing) and 18 months (self-assessment scales) after surgery. Twenty-three patients have not been evaluated for different reported reasons. RESULTS: Pure-tone hearing thresholds decreased similarly in both implanted and contralateral ears. The satisfaction ratings and the functional gain provided by the VSB remained stable. Speech comprehension in quiet conditions without the VSB decreased from 56 to 37% in 5 to 8 yr, but an 81% score was achieved with the VSB. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that the performance of the VSB does not deteriorate for more than 5 yr, without adverse effect. These results confirm the safety and the effectiveness of the VSB with a long-term follow-up.

Résumé : Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), cataplexy, direct onsets of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep from wakefulness (DREMs) and deficiency of orexins, neuropeptides that promote wakefulness largely via activation of histamine (HA) pathways. The hypothesis that the orexin defect can be circumvented by enhancing HA release was explored in narcoleptic mice and patients using tiprolisant, an inverse H(3)-receptor agonist. In narcoleptic orexin(-/-) mice, tiprolisant enhanced HA and noradrenaline neuronal activity, promoted wakefulness and decreased abnormal DREMs, all effects being amplified by co-administration of modafinil, a currently-prescribed wake-promoting drug. In a pilot single-blind trial on 22 patients receiving a placebo followed by tiprolisant, both for 1 week, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score was reduced from a baseline value of 17.6 by 1.0 with the placebo (p>0.05) and 5.9 with tiprolisant (p<0.001). Excessive daytime sleep, unaffected under placebo, was nearly suppressed on the last days of tiprolisant dosing. H(3)-receptor inverse agonists could constitute a novel effective treatment of EDS, particularly when associated with modafinil.

Résumé : In this paper we present a networked lightweight and par- tially reconfigurable platform assisted by a remote bitstreams server. We propose a software and hardware architecture as well as a new data-link level network protocol implementation dedicated to dynamic and par- tial reconfiguration of FPGAs. It requires a network controller and much less external memories to store reconfiguration software, bitstreams and buffer pools used by standard communication protocols. Our measures, based on a real implementation, show that our system can download re- mote bistreams with a reconfiguration speed ten times faster than known solutions.

Résumé : Autotaxin is a type II ectonucleotide pyrophosphate phosphodiesterase enzyme. It has been recently discovered that it also has a lysophospholipase D activity. This enzyme probably provides most of the extracellular lysophosphatidic acid from lysophosphatidylcholine. The cloning and tissue distribution of the three isoforms (imaginatively called alpha, beta, and gamma) from human and mouse are reported in this study, as well as their tissue distribution by PCR in the human and mouse. The fate of the alpha isoform from human was also studied after purification and using mass spectrometry. Indeed, this particular isoform expresses the intron 12 in which a cleavage site is present, leading to a rapid catabolism of the isoform. For the human isoform gamma and the total autotaxin mRNA expression, quantitative PCR is presented in 21 tissues. The isoforms were expressed in two different hosts, insect cells and Chinese hamster ovary cells, and were highly purified. The characteristics of the six purified isoforms (pH and temperature dependence, K(m) and V(max) values, and their dependence on metal ions) are presented in this study. Their sensitivity to a small molecule inhibitor, hypericin, is also shown. Finally, the specificity of the isoforms toward a large family of lysophosphatidylcholines is reported. This study is the first complete description of the reported autotaxin isoforms.

Résumé : The ESA CoSMOS study aims at performing the first validation of the SMOS Soil Moisture Level 2algorithm using real data. The validation relies on data acquired during the CoSMOS/NAFE campaign in the Goulburn River Catchment (Southeast Australia) in 2005. The CoSMOS/ NAFE airborne campaign involved two L-band radiometers, EMIRAD (full- pol, bi-angular) and PLMR (dual-pol, multi-angular), and provided L- band data at different resolutions for six weeks.Intensive ground sampling was carried out too to provide measurements of all the surface parameters required by the soil moisture retrieval algorithm. This communication presents the main outcomes of the study. The focus is threefold:i) how do simulations of the surface brightness temperature and soil moisture retrievals perform using the ^Ñdefault^Ò L2 algorithm over homogenous an heterogeneous surfaces? Ii) what recommendations can be made in terms of fine-tuning of the microwave model used by the SMOSretrieval algorithm (soil model, vegetation model, litter model), and iii) how does the retrieved soil moisture at the scale of a SMOS pixel compare to ground measurements of soil moisture across the catchment? These questions are addressed in the ESA CoSMOS study, which makes a comprehensive data set available for validation of the SMOS Level 2 algorithm, and is currently at the phase of performing the forward model simulations and soil moisture retrievals.

Résumé : We measured the Cr and Zn stable isotope compositions of nine ureilite samples. Both Cr and Zn isotopic ratios are negatively correlated with their respective concentrations. These results may reflect isotopic fractionations during volatile loss.
