Résumé : In this paper, we present the study of thermal behaviour of 36Cl in nuclear graphite used in the St. Laurent A2 UNGG reactor (graphite moderated and CO2 cooled reactor). 37Cl, used to simulate 36Cl displaced from its original structural site by recoil, has been implanted into nuclear graphite samples (energy = 250 keV, fluence = 5 × 1013 at cm-2). The samples have been annealed in the 200-800 °C temperature range and analysed by SIMS. Structural modifications have been controlled by Raman microspectroscopy. This study shows that, in the considered temperature range and for a short annealing duration (4 h), chlorine is released almost athermally. At 500 °C, around 20% of the initial 37Cl content is released. At 800 °C, the release reaches a plateau and the loss of 37Cl is around 30%. Raman microspectroscopy shows that 37Cl implantation induces a structural disorder and that during annealing, the original structure is not completely recovered. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Résumé : We propose a model where imperfect matching between firms and workers on local labor markets leads to incentives for spatial agglomeration. We show that the occurence of spatial agglomeration depends on initial size differences in terms of both number of workers and firms. Allowing for dynamics of workers' and firms' location choices, we show that the spatial outcome depends crucially on different dimensions of agents' mobility. The effect of a higher level of human capital on regional disparities depends on whether it makes workers more mobile or more specialized on the labor market.

Résumé : Using open-top chambers, the impact of ozone (O3) on foliar carboxylases of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was investigated. From sowing, beans were exposed to non-filtered air (NF) and NF supplied with 40 (+40) and 80 (+80) nL L_1 O3. Twenty days after emergence, primary and first trifoliate leaves were sampled. Biochemical characteristics of leaves from +40 were quite similar to those from NF. Conversely, +80 induced distinct biochemical effects in primary and first trifoliate leaves. Regarding primary leaves, +80 reduced ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity by 33% whereas it stimulated phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) activity by 376%. The reduction in Rubisco activity was accompanied by a decrease in both Rubisco subunit amounts and a consistent oxidative modification of the Rubisco small subunit (SSU). These changes came with a drastic loss in pigmentation. Regarding first trifoliate leaves, +80 stimulated Rubisco activity by 33% while it disturbed neither PEPc activity nor pigmentation. Surprisingly, the enhanced Rubisco activity was associated with a slight decrease in Rubisco protein quantity, which was not coupled with the formation of carbonyl groups in Rubisco-SSU.

Résumé : Although cell wall remodeling is an essential feature of plant growth and development, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. This work describes the characterization of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants with altered expression of ARAF1, a bifunctional alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase/beta-D-xylosidase (At3g10740) belonging to family 51 glycosyl-hydrolases. ARAF1 was localized in several cell types in the vascular system of roots and stems, including xylem vessels and parenchyma cells surrounding the vessels, the cambium, and the phloem. araf1 T-DNA insertional mutants showed no visible phenotype, whereas transgenic plants that overexpressed ARAF1 exhibited a delay in inflorescence emergence and altered stem architecture. Although global monosaccharide analysis indicated only slight differences in cell wall composition in both mutant and over-expressing lines, immunolocalization experiments using anti-arabinan (LM6) and anti-xylan (LM10) antibodies indicated cell type-specific alterations in cell wall structure. In araf1 mutants, an increase in LM6 signal intensity was observed in the phloem, cambium, and xylem parenchyma in stems and roots, largely coinciding with ARAF1 expression sites. The ectopic overexpression of ARAF1 resulted in an increase in LM10 labeling in the secondary walls of interfascicular fibers and xylem vessels. The combined ARAF1 gene expression and immunolocalization studies suggest that arabinan-containing pectins are potential in vivo substrates of ARAF1 in Arabidopsis.

Résumé : Objective To assess adherence to clinical practice guidelines for three interventions routinely used in critical care medicine. Design and setting Multicenter, 1-day cross-sectional observational study in 44 intensive care units in four countries. Patients A total of 419 patients hospitalized in participating ICUs on the day of the survey. Measurements and results Red blood cell transfusion (n = 29) was performed appropriately in 22 patients (76%), while among the 390 patients who received no transfusion 4 (1%) had a valid indication. Setting of tidal volume in acute respiratory distress syndrome, assessed in 45 patients, was deemed appropriate in 37 cases (82%). Prescription of stress ulcer prophylaxis (n = 128) was appropriate in only 24 patients (19%), while among the 268 patients who were not treated 28 (10%) had an indication. Conclusions The implementation of recommendations varies across different domains of care. While the adherence to current recommendations in routine practice is acceptable as regards tidal volume settings in acute respiratory distress syndrome, it is suboptimal for blood transfusion and prevention of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Practice surveys are useful to inform strategies currently developed to assess practices of health-care professionals and develop strategies for more effective dissemination of medical knowledge.

Résumé : Dynamic modeling Despite many mathematical models available in the literature for simulation and optimization of anaerobic digestion processes, only few can accurately account for hydrogen production. In the present study, experiments were performed in a continuous stirred tank reactor with a hydraulic retention time close to 6 h. pH was regulated to 5.5 and agitation was maintained at 300 rpm. Molasses were used as substrate with feeding concentrations varying between 5 and 20 g L-1. Experimental data were used to estimate the pseudo-stoichiometric coefficients with a constrained nonlinear optimization. The obtained pseudo-stoichiometric matrix is made of two reactions, one being associated with hydrogen production and the other one with acetate production. Finally, a dynamic model is derived and is demonstrated to simulate very accurately the dynamic evolution of hydrogen production, but also biomass and intermediate compounds (i.e., individual volatile fatty acids) concentrations while being very close to the stoichiometric balance. Finally, the best hydrogen production was for a concentration of substrate of 20.09 g L-1 and a liquid feed flow of 5 L d-1 (i.e., 1.47 mol-H2 mol-glucose-1).
