Résumé : Anaerobic digestion of solid wastes is an emerging solution for both waste management and energy production. The high complexity of the process is mostly attributed to the absence of descriptors for the design and the prediction of such a process. This paper presents an approach for the description of organic matter based on several biochemical parameters, established on 22 different organic wastes. The lignocellulosic content is the most important parameter for the prediction of anaerobic biodegradability and methane production; in addition, the knowledge of the carbohydrate, lipid and protein contents is also crucial and makes possible a prediction of the intrinsic kinetics of the reaction.

Résumé : In this communication, we demonstrate that dopamine is able to undergo a polymerisation process in (PLL-HA)n polyelectrolyte multilayer films, and that this polymerisation is of the same nature as in solution at pH 8.5. This polymerisation changes the chemical composition and decreases the mobility of the PLL chains in the film, and ultimately allows the easy detachment of the film as free-standing membranes with 0.1 M HCl solutions.

Résumé : We show experimentally the existence of a magnetic instability between two miscible fluids. The sample is an aqueous ferrofluid. At time t = 0, the ferrofluid and water are put into contact in a Hele–Shaw cell and then submitted to a homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to the cell. Above a threshold value of the magnetic field a fingering instability is observed at the diffuse interface, with fingers growing with time. A wavelength can be defined as the mean distance between fingers. This wavelength in the linear regime is approximatively equal to the thickness of the cell.

Résumé : The quantitation of human hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the serum of infected patients is recommended to characterize the course of chronic HBV infection. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the performance of the Abbott RealTime PCR assay for HBV DNA quantitation by comparison with the standard Versant HBV DNA 3.0 assay. The better sensitivity and broader dynamic range of HBV DNA quantitation using the Abbott RealTime PCR assay was confirmed by the study of 362 serum samples from 311 patients. In addition, data analysis revealed the concordance of HBV DNA quantitations between the two assays. When this evaluation was assessed as a function of HBV genotype, there was discordance for HBV genotype C samples. Thus, we performed an in-house PCR to confirm the discrepancy observed regarding the HBV genotypes. The in-house PCR results agreed better with the Abbott RealTime PCR method when compared with the standard hybridization assay. In conclusion, the wide dynamic range of HBV DNA quantitation achieved with the Abbott RealTime PCR assay makes it appropriate for the clinical monitoring of HBV infected patients. However, a change of HBV DNA quantitation method could influence results on the follow-up of HBV genotype C infected patients.

Résumé : The effect of inorganic silica nanoparticles on the morphology and viscoelastic properties of polypropylene/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (PP/EVA) immiscible blends has been investigated. Different EVA with different molar masses were used in this study. Virgin and filled blends were prepared by using a twin-screw mini-extruder. Microscopy studies revealed a significant change in morphology of PP/EVA blend in the presence of silica nanoparticles. Also, the images proved the migration of silica nanoparticles toward EVA phase, and to the interface. The quantitative analysis of the rheological experimental data was based on the framework of the Palierne model, extended to filled immiscible blends. Based on this model, a method of determination of the interfacial tension from rheological measurement has been addressed with an improved accuracy. Even if silica mainly plays a thermodynamic role in the stabilization mechanism by decreasing the effective interfacial tension, the influence of particular rheological conditions and the structure of the phases must be taken into account for a complete understanding of the final morphology of such systems.
