Résumé : This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the variability of water vapour in a growing convective boundary-layer (CBL) over land, highlighting the complex links between advection, convective activity and moisture heterogeneity in the boundary layer. A Large-eddy Simulation (LES) is designed, based on observations, and validated, using an independent data-set collected during the International H 2 O Project (IHOP 2002) fieldexperiment. Ample information about the moisture distribution in space and time, as well as other important CBL parameters are acquired by mesonet stations, balloon soundings, instruments on-board two aircraft and the DLR airborne water-vapour differential-absorption lidar. Because it can deliver two-dimensional cross-sections at high spatial resolution (140 m horizontal, 200 m vertical), the airborne lidar offers valuable insights of small-scale moisture-variability throughout the CBL. The LES is able to reproduce the development of the CBL in the morning and early afternoon, as assessed by comparisons of simulated mean profiles of key meteorological variables with sounding data. Simulated profiles of the variance of water-vapour mixing-ratio were found to be in good agreement with the lidar-derived counterparts. Finally, probability-density functions of potential temperature, vertical velocity and water-vapour mixing-ratio calculated from the LES show great consistency with those derived from aircraft in situ measurements in the middle of the CBL. Downdraughts entrained from above the CBL are governing the scale of moisture variability. Characteristic length-scales are found to be larger for water-vapour mixing-ratio than for temperature The observed water-vapour variability exhibits contributions from different scales. The influence of the mesoscale (larger than LES domain size, i.e. 10 km) on the smaller-scale variability is assessed using LES and observations. The small-scale variability of water vapour is found to be important and to be driven by the dynamics of the CBL. Both lidar observations and LES evidence that dry downdraughts entrained from above the CBL are governing the scale of moisture variability. Characteristic length-scales are found to be larger for water-vapour mixing-ratio than for temperature and vertical velocity. In particular, intrusions of drier free-troposphere air from above the growing CBL impose a marked negative skewness on the water-vapour distribution within it, both as observed and in the simulation.

Résumé : OBJECTIVE: To achieve a common strategy in the event of a suspected venous thromboembolism. DESIGN: A multifaceted intervention, combining an audit strategy and implementation of local guidelines: phase 1, the first step, consisted of a 6-month audit to identify dysfunction; during phase 2, intervention, local guidelines were formulated by a working group and then implemented; phase 3 consisted of a re-audit over a 6-month period following the intervention. SETTING: A tertiary hospital, France. PARTICIPANTS: 419 patients with suspected venous thromboembolism in phase 1; 287 patients with suspected pulmonary embolism in phase 3. RESULTS: First phase: a dysfunction was observed in three of five criteria under study: (i) the diagnostic procedure lasted more than 48 hours in 114 patients (27.2%); (ii) no anticoagulant therapy at the time of suspicion in 116 patients (27.7%); (iii) an inconclusive lung scan without further testing in the event of a suspected pulmonary embolism in 40 patients (14%); the intervention phase was thus restricted to the management of suspected pulmonary embolism; similar results were found during the phase 3 re-audit. CONCLUSION: No improvement in the diagnostic work-up in the event of a suspected pulmonary embolism was observed following this multifaceted intervention.

Résumé : Domain specific languages for model transformation have recently generated significant interest in the model-driven engineering community. The adopted QVT specification has normalized some scheme of model transformation language; however several different model transformation language paradigms are likely to co-exist in the near future, ranging from imperative to declarative (including hybrid). It remains nevertheless questionable how model transformation specific languages compare to more general purpose languages, in terms of applicability, scalability and robustness. In this paper we report on our specific experience in applying an executable meta-language to the model transformation field.

Résumé : OBJECTIVE: Although B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is the most common leukemia among children, no chemically inducible model of this leukemia has yet been described in vivo. METHODS: Leukemia was chemically induced in male WKAH/Hkm rats by a nitrosourea derivative, N-butylnitrosourea (BNU), an alkylating agent, administered orally 5 days a week for 24 weeks. Development of leukemia was monitored by clinical observation, follow-up of blood parameters, and appearance of blast cells in peripheral blood samples. The phenotype of the leukemia was determined by cytological examination, cytochemical reactions, and by immunophenotyping of bone marrow cells using various markers. The feasibility of leukemia transplantation was investigated. Clonality and karyotype analyses were also performed. RESULTS: We observed the appearance of acute leukemia in 60% of the rats treated with BNU. Of these, 65% developed pre-B-ALL, which was serially transplantable to healthy WKAH/Hkm male rats. Karyotype analysis did not reveal clonal abnormalities. Clonality determined by immunoglobulin gene rearrangement sequencing disclosed that the pre-B-ALL were mostly oligoclonal. CONCLUSION: This new in vivo model of inducible pre-B-ALL might be useful for investigating the effects of co-initiating or promoting agents suspected to be involved in leukemia development, and for disclosing new molecular events leading to leukemogenic processes.
