Résumé : We consider an age-structured discrete time modeling of a renewable resource, controlled by the harvesting of the mature class. A harvesting policy is considered to be sustainable if a minimum harvesting threshold can be guaranteed at any time, taking into account availability constraints. For the characterization of such policies, viability analysis reveals the intrinsic compatibility of the dynamics within a given threshold. Formulae for the maximal sustainable threshold that can be maintained by the resource, viability kernels and the set of corresponding sustainable feedbacks are obtained. We then propose explicit management rules, maximizing the sustainable threshold, and illustrate them with numerical simulations for two kinds of resources.

Résumé : This paper deals with the problem of dynamicmodeling and identification of passenger cars. It presents a new method that is based on robotics techniques for modeling and description of tree-structured multibody systems. This method enables us to systematically obtain the dynamic identification model, which is linear with respect to the dynamic parameters. The estimation of the parameters is carried out using a weighted least squares method. The identification is tested using vehicle dynamics simulation software used by the car manufacturer PSA Peugeot-Citroën in order to define a set of trajectories with good excitation properties and to determine the number of degrees of freedom of the model. The method has then been used to estimate the dynamic parameters of an experimental Peugeot 406, which is equipped with different position, velocity, and force sensors.

Résumé : BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to describe the diagnostic panorama of human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies across 11 countries. METHODS: From data collected for surveillance purposes, we describe annual proportions of deaths due to different human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in eleven EUROCJD-consortium countries over the period 1993-2002, as well as variations in the use of diagnostic tests. Using logistic models we quantified international differences and changes across time. RESULTS: In general, pre-mortem use of diagnostic investigations increased with time. International differences in pathological confirmation of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, stable over time, were evident. Compared to their counterparts, some countries displayed remarkable patterns, such as: 1) the high proportion, increasing with time, of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the United Kingdom, (OR 607.99 95% CI 84.72-4363.40), and France (OR 18.35, 95% CI 2.20-152.83); 2) high, decreasing proportions of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in France, (OR 5.81 95% CI 4.09-8.24), and the United Kingdom, (OR 1.54 95% CI 1.03-2.30); and, 3) high and stable ratios of genetic forms in Slovakia (OR 21.82 95% CI 12.42-38.33) and Italy (OR 2.12 95% CI 1.69-2.68). CONCLUSION: Considerable international variation in aetiological subtypes of human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies was evident over the observation period. With the exception of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in France and the United Kingdom, these differences persisted across time.

Résumé : L-band (1-2 GHz) microwave radiometry is the most relevant remote sensing technique to monitor soil moisture over land surfaces at the global scale. A synthetic multi-angular brightness temperature data set over land surfaces was simulated at 1.4 GHz, at a half-degree resolution and at the global scale (Pellarin et al., 2003a). This data set was built in order to develop and validate methods to retrieve soil moisture for near-future 1.4 GHz space missions. Brightness temperatures were computed using a simple model (L-MEB, L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere) based on radiative transfer equations. The L-MEB model is the result of an extensive review of the current knowledge of the microwave emission of various land covers (herbaceous and woody vegetation, frozen and unfrozen bare soil, snow, etc.) at L-Band considering that the model should be simple enough to be compatible with the simulation of a half-degree resolution and global scale data set. This model was parameterized for simulating L-band observations (in the 1-2 GHz range) but the model equations remain valid in a low frequency range (about 1 to 10 GHz) and thus including the L-, C- and X-bands. The soil and vegetation characteristics needed to initialize the L-MEB model were derived from existing land cover maps. Continuous simulations from a land-surface scheme for 1987 and 1988 provided time series of the main variables driving the L-MEB model: soil temperature at the surface and at depth, surface soil moisture, proportion of frozen surface soil moisture, and snow cover characteristics (depth, density, grain size, liquid water content). The different components of the emission model are described in the following sections. These sections present the general formulation of TB for a composite pixel and the microwave emission modules for soil, vegetation-covered surfaces, open water, snow-covered surfaces and atmospheric effects.
