Résumé : BACKGROUND: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) represents a major target for current radiosensitizing strategies. We wished to ascertain whether a correlation exists between the expression of EGFR and treatment outcome in a group of patients with rectal adenocarcinoma who had undergone preoperative radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: Within a six-year period, 138 patients underwent preoperative radiotherapy and curative surgery for rectal cancer (UICC stages II-III) at our institute. Among them, 77 pretherapeutic tumor biopsies were available for semi-quantitative immunohistochemical investigation evaluating the intensity and the number (extent) of tumor stained cells. Statistical analyses included Cox regression for calculating risk ratios of survival endpoints and logistic regression for determining odds ratios for the development of loco-regional recurrences. RESULTS: Median age was 64 years (range: 30-88). Initial staging showed 75% and 25% stage II and III tumors, respectively. RT consisted of 44-Gy pelvic irradiation in 2-Gy fractions using 18-MV photons. In 25 very low-rectal-cancer patients the primary tumor received a boost dose of up to 16 Gy for a sphincter-preservation approach. Concomitant chemotherapy was used in 17% of the cases. All patients underwent complete total mesorectal resection. Positive staining (EGFR+) was observed in 43 patients (56%). Median follow-up was 36 months (range: 6-86). Locoregional recurrence rates were 7 and 20% for EGFR extent inferior and superior to 25%, respectively. The corresponding locoregional recurrence-free survival rate at two years was 94% (95% confidence interval, CI, 92-98%) and 84% (CI 95%, 58-95%), respectively (P = 0.06). Multivariate analyses showed a significant correlation between the rate of loco-regional recurrence and three parameters: EGFR extent superior to 25% (hazard ratio = 7.18, CI 95%, 1.17-46, P = 0.037), rectal resection with microscopic residue (hazard ratio = 6.92, CI 95%, 1.18-40.41, P = 0.032), and a total dose of 44 Gy (hazard ratio = 5.78, CI 95%, 1.04-32.05, P = 0.045). CONCLUSION: EGFR expression impacts on loco-regional recurrence. Knowledge of expression of EGFR in rectal cancer could contribute to the identification of patients with an increased risk of recurrences, and to the prediction of prognosis.

Résumé : Spectral observations of the Sun in the vacuum-ultraviolet wavelength range by SUMER on SOHO led to the discovery of unusual emission features - called humps here - at 116.70 nm and 117.05 nm on either side of the He I 58.43 nm line. This resonance line is seen in the second order of diffraction, whereas the humps are recorded in the first order with the SUMER spectrometer. In its spectra both orders are superimposed. Two less pronounced humps can be detected at 117.27 nm and near 117.85 nm. After rejecting various possibilities of an instrumental cause of the humps, they are studied in different solar regions. Most of the measurements, in particular those related to the limb-brightening characteristics, indicate that the humps are not part of the background continuum. An assembly of spectrally-unresolved atomic or ionic emission lines might be contributing to the hump at 117.05 nm, but no such lines are known near 116.7 nm. It is concluded that we detect genuine radiation, the generation of which is not understood. A two-photon emission process, parametric frequency down conversion, and molecular emissions are briefly considered as causes of the humps, but a final conclusion could not be reached.

Résumé : On the basis of field observations in the Huqf area in eastern Oman, Montenat et al. (2003) defined an extensional phase of faulting of Aptian age in the Arabian platform (see also Montenat and Barrier, 2002). We recently revisited the fault exposures of the Wadi Sha'bat al Tawraq from which this conclusion has been drawn (location in Figure 1a). Our observations contradict those of Montenat et al. (2003), and consequently our conclusions are opposite from theirs. Here we review the conflicting observations and discuss the different interpretations.

Résumé : In extant chordates, the overall patterning along the anteroposterior and dorsoventral axes of the neural tube is remarkably conserved. It has thus been proposed that four domains corresponding to the vertebrate presumptive forebrain, midbrain-hindbrain transition, hindbrain, and spinal cord were already present in the common chordate ancestor. To obtain insights on the evolution of the patterning of the anterior neural tube, we performed a study aimed at characterizing the expression of regulatory genes in the sensory vesicle of Ciona intestinalis, the anteriormost part of the central nervous system (CNS) related to the vertebrate forebrain, at tailbud stages. Selected genes encoded primarily for homologues of transcription factors involved in vertebrate forebrain patterning. Seven of these genes were expressed in the ventral sensory vesicle. A prominent feature of these ascidian genes is their restricted and complementary domains of expression at tailbud stages. These patterning markers thus refine the map of the developing sensory vesicle. Furthermore, they allow us to propose that a large part of the ventral and lateral sensory vesicle consists in a patterning domain corresponding to the vertebrate presumptive hypothalamus.

Résumé : Different titanium oxysulfide thin films were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering using two types of targets in a pure argon or mixed oxygen/argon atmosphere with a total pressure of 1 or 0.2 Pa. We have studied the influence of the sputtering conditions (target, total pressure, oxygen partial pressure) on the composition, the morphology and the local and electronic structure of our thin films. A set of complementary techniques (scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)) was used to characterize the thin films. Two types of films have been obtained: thin films prepared from TiS2 target having a composition and a local structure close to TiS3 and thin films obtained from TiS2/TiS3 target characterized by a composition and a local structure close to TiS2. The complementary use of XPS and sulfur K-edge XAS spectroscopies has allowed us to evidence the coexistence of different microdomains into the thin films corresponding respectively to a pure sulfur, a pure oxygen or a mixed sulfur/oxygen environment.
