Résumé : Three strains of a hitherto unknown, Gram-negative, anaerobic coccus were isolated from human samples. At the phenotypic level, the isolates displayed all the characteristics of bacteria belonging to the genus Veillonella . Sequence analysis revealed that the three strains shared >99·5 % similarity in 16S rDNA sequence and >98·4 % similarity in dnaK sequence. The three unknown strains formed a separate subclade that was clearly remote from Veillonella species of human and animal origin. Based on these results, the three strains were considered to represent a novel species within the genus Veillonella , for which the name Veillonella montpellierensis is proposed. The type strain of the species is ADV 281.99 T (=CIP 107992 T =CCUG 48299 T ).

Résumé : Objectives: The present study was designed as a face-to-face functional comparison of human skeletal myoblasts (SMs) and CD133(+) bone marrow-derived hematopoietic progenitors in an animal model of semichronic myocardial infarction. Background: Compared with SMs, bone marrow-derived cells have the advantage of plasticity and might more effectively regenerate ischemic cardiac tissue. However, few data exist on the comparative efficacy of these two cell types in semichronic infarcts. Methods: A myocardial infarction was created by coronary ligation in 32 nude rats. Ten days later, rats received in-scar injections of human SMs, CD133(+) progenitors, or culture medium. Left ventricular function was assessed before and one month after transplantation by echocardiography and pressure-volume loops. Immunofluorescence, polymerase chain reaction, and in situ hybridization were used to detect cells grafted in the hearts. Results: One month after transplantation, left ventricular ejection fraction decreased by 8 +/- 4% in controls, whereas it increased by 7 +/- 3% in CD133(+)-grafted hearts (p = 0.0015 vs. controls) and further by 15 +/- 5% in SM-treated hearts (p = 0.008 vs. controls). Systolic indices yielded by pressure-volume loops paralleled these data. Engrafted myotubes were identified in all SM-treated hearts by immunofluorescence, whereas in CD133(+)-grafted hearts, few human cells were only detected by polymerase chain reaction. Conclusions: In the setting of postinfarction scars, the transplantation of bone marrow-derived CD133(+) progenitors improves cardiac function, but this benefit is not superior to that afforded by myogenic cells.

Résumé : We report the use of carbon–proton heteronuclear selective refocusing 2D NMR experiments dedicated to the spectral analysis of enantiomers dissolved in weakly ordering chiral liquid crystalline solvents. The method permits the extraction of carbon–proton residual dipolar couplings for each enantiomer from a complex or unresolved proton-coupled 13C spectral patterns. Illustrative examples are analysed and discussed. It is shown that an accurate determination of enantiomeric excess is possible.

Résumé : In September 2003, the Lidar Working Group (LWG) of the Network for Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC) initiated an extensive project to compare the ozone and temperature algorithms used within NDSC. This initiative, referred to later as Algorithm Intercomparison Initiative (A2I), uses simulated lidar signals to test and compare various parts of the ozone and temperature lidar algorithms. In addition to the fact that it meets the requirement of the NDSC protocols, this exercise allows the detailed assessment, by all the participants, of some of the sources and magnitudes of various uncertainties associated with the algorithms, and/or with the theoretical assumptions made in these algorithms. The outcome of the A2I is to try to find common grounds in the way ozone and temperature can be retrieved in order to reduce and possibly eradicate discrepancies due to algorithm issues alone. Specific issues such as homogenizing the choice of Rayleigh extinction cross-sections, ozone absorption cross-sections, a priori information, and the definition of the vertical resolutions are among the primary targets of the A2I outcome.

Résumé : OBJECTIVE: To verify the reproducibility of measurement of transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPo(2)) on the back of the hand in control subjects and stroke patients in the assessment of the complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I). DESIGN: Case series study. SETTING: Physical medicine and rehabilitation department at a university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Eighteen control subjects, 30 stroke patients without CRPS I, and 12 stroke patients with CRPS I. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: TcPo(2) was measured on the back of hands on 2 consecutive days using a polarographic technique. The reproducibility was evaluated by using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the coefficient of variation. RESULTS: In the controls, the values of TcPo(2) were not reproducible, with an ICC of.51 (95% confidence interval [CI],.23-.72). Similarly, in the hemiplegics with and without CRPS I, TcPo(2) was not reproducible, with an ICC of.43 (95% CI, -.15 to.74) and.69 (95% CI,.45-.84), respectively. The differences between the 2 upper limbs were even less reproducible in each population. CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of TcPo(2) on the hand using our procedure did not seem to be sufficiently reproducible for application to a pathology such as CRPS I.

Résumé : Des modèles informatisés cherchent à simuler différents aspects économiques du comportement de systèmes agroforestiers qui mêlent sur une même parcelle arbres et cultures annuelles. La littérature décrivant de tels logiciels est rare, lorsqu'elle est comparée par exemple à la littérature sur les modèles biophysiques, et cela crée quelques difficultés pour le développement de nouveaux modèles ou l'extension de ceux qui existent. On décrit les différents modèles recensés selon les caractéristiques suivantes : contexte et objectifs, systèmes modélisés, génération et utilisation de données biophysiques, interface avec l'utilisateur, entrées et sorties. Ces modèles, européens, australien ou de Nouvelle Zélande sont ainsi comparés, et permettent d'évaluer la rentabilité de systèmes agroforestiers, au niveau de la parcelle ou à celui de l'exploitation agricole.
