Résumé : Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data (180 sites) from Hercynian granitoids from Southern Corsica (France) and Northern Sardinia (Italy) provide a high-density net of structural information for this part of the European Hercynian belt. Two main groups of granitoids, defined according to petrography and relative chronology, provide contrasting AMS results. For both groups, shallowly dipping magnetic foliations and lineations suggest that these granitoids were emplaced as large-scale shallowly dipping sheets or open funnel-shaped structures at a high structural level. In non-leucocratic granitoids (305–300 Ma), foliation and lineation trajectory maps reveal antiforms and synforms with a N130 axial trace. Intersection of the foliation planes indicates a N120 low-plunging ‘fold’ axis, revealing a N120 maximum stretching direction. Slightly younger leucocratic granitoids (295–285 Ma), bounded by late Hercynian faults, display N50 lineations parallel to the elongated shapes of these intrusions. This structural pattern is undisturbed by the faults, and suggests an intrusion in decakilometre-scale tensional fractures indicating a N140 instantaneous stretching direction compatible with the stretching direction evidenced in non-leucocratic granitoids. A younger c. N20-oriented Permian dyke swarm confirms the permanence of this stretching direction over at least 35 Ma and indicates a coaxial strain regime. To integrate these new data within a broader context in the Hercynian belt, Corsica has to be back-rotated clockwise by 70° to its Permian position, which indicates a north to N30 stretching direction for the 305–285 Ma interval, compatible with the post-collisional strain and stress fields of the French Massif Central at about the same period.

Résumé : [1] The Earth's Dole effect describes the isotopic 18 O/ 16 O-enrichment of atmospheric oxygen with respect to ocean water, amounting under today's conditions to 23.5%. We have developed a model of the Earth's Dole effect by combining the results of three-dimensional models of the oceanic and terrestrial carbon and oxygen cycles with results of atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs) with built-in water isotope diagnostics. We obtain a range from 22.4% to 23.3% for the isotopic enrichment of atmospheric oxygen. We estimate a stronger contribution to the global Dole effect by the terrestrial relative to the marine biosphere in contrast to previous studies. This is primarily caused by a modeled high leaf water enrichment of 5-6%. Leaf water enrichment rises by $1% to 6-7% when we use it to fit the observed 23.5% of the global Dole effect. The present model is designed to be utilized in forthcoming paleo studies allowing a quantitative analysis of long-term observations from polar ice cores.

Résumé : Banna virus (BAV, genus Seadornavirus, family Reoviridae) is an arbovirus suspected to be responsible for encephalitis in humans. Two genotypes of this virus are distinguishable: A (Chinese isolate, BAV-Ch) and B (Indonesian isolate, BAV-In6969) which exhibit only 41% amino-acid identity in the sequence of their VP9.
The VP7 to VP12 of BAV-Ch and VP9 of BAV-In6969 were expressed in bacteria using pGEX-4T-2 vector. VP9 was chosen to establish an ELISA for BAV, based mainly on two observations: (i) VP9 is a major protein in virus-infected cells and is a capsid protein (ii) among all the proteins expressed, VP9 was obtained in high amount and showed the highest immuno-reactivity to anti-BAV ascitic fluid.
The VP9s ELISA was evaluated in three populations: French blood donors and two populations (blood donors and patients with a neurological syndrome) from Malaysia, representing the region where the virus was isolated in the past.
The specificity of this ELISA was >98%. In mice injected with live BAV, the assay detected IgG-antibody to BAV infection 21 days post-injection, which was confirmed by Western blot using BAV-infected cells.
The VP9 ELISA permits to determine the sero-status of a population without special safety precautions and without any requirements to propagate the BAV. This test should be a useful tool for epidemiological survey of BAV.

Résumé : BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To replace digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in carotid stenosis evaluation, noninvasive imaging techniques have to reach a high concordance rate. Our purpose is to compare the concordance rates of contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CEMRA) and CT angiography (CTA) with Doppler ultrasound (DUS) in clinical routine practice. METHODS: We evaluated prospectively with DUS, CEMRA, and CTA 150 patients suspected of carotid stenosis. The overall concordance rates of the 3 techniques were calculated for symptomatic stenosis > or =50% and > or =70%, for asymptomatic stenosis > or =60%, and for occlusion. For the carotid arteries treated by surgery (n=97), the results of each method and combined techniques were recorded, and misclassification rates were evaluated from surgical reports. RESULTS: The overall concordance rates of DUS-CEMRA, DUS-CTA, and CEMRA-CTA were not statistically different. However, the concordance rate of DUS-CEMRA (92.53%) was significantly higher than that for DUS-CTA (79.10%) in the surgical asymptomatic stenosis group (P=0.0258). CTA considered alone would misclassify the stenosis in a significant number of cases (11 of 64) in the surgical asymptomatic group compared with CEMRA (3 of 67) and DUS (1 of 66) (P=0.0186 versus MRA, P=0.0020 versus DUS). CONCLUSIONS: With the techniques as utilized in our study, the overall concordance rates of combined noninvasive methods are similar for measuring carotid stenosis in clinical routine practice, but in asymptomatic carotid stenosis, the decision making for surgery is significantly altered if DUS and CTA are considered in place of DUS and CEMRA.

Résumé : The present study aims at studying the role played by high-frequency wind variability, wave reflection and easterly wind anomalies in the western Pacific in the onset, growth and termination phases of the 1997–1998 El Niño using the Trident intermediate coupled model and observations. While the anomalous strength of the trade winds in 1996 favored the initiation of a warm event in 1997 (via western Pacific boundary Rossby wave reflection), the actual timing of the onset and the amplitude of the event resulted from the large March 1997 wind event. Once initiated, high-frequency westerly winds strongly contributed to the rapid growth of the warm event and to the displacement of the eastern edge of the warm-pool. Moreover, both easterly and westerly high-frequency wind variability in 1997–1998 contributed to the amplitude of the event, set the evolution of the warm event and potentially influenced the equatorial Pacific conditions at least one year after the El Niño event. In addition, eastern boundary reflection also significantly contributed to the amplitude and duration of the warm event, whereas its termination was a combination of various factors: reflection of upwelling Rossby waves at the western boundary and large easterly wind anomalies observed in the western Pacific from November 1997 to early 1998. These factors were sufficient to terminate the event and to switch temperature anomalies from warm to cold. To conclude, understanding the coupling between the high- and low-frequency wind variability, i.e., studying ENSO as a multi-scale phenomenon, will certainly lead to a better comprehension of the diversity of its behavior and potentially to an improvement of its predictability.

Résumé : We have studied the effects of methoxychlor (MXC), dieldrin, and lindane on fertilization and early development of sea urchin egg. These organochlorine pesticides have often been found in polluted ground and water near agricultural sites, and have therefore been detected from time to time in the food chain and in drinking water. They have been reported to alter various reproduction functions in various animals including marine populations. We observed that the rate of fertilization decreased when the sperm was incubated with dieldrin or lindane. Treatment of eggs with each pesticide did not prevent fertilization, but increased the rate in polyspermy, delayed or blocked the first mitotic divisions, and altered early embryonic development. Moreover, all pesticides could alter several intracellular biochemical pathways that control first mitotic divisions and early development, including intracellular calcium homeostasis, MPF (mitosis promoting factor) activity and formation of the bipolar mitotic spindle. We found that lindane was the most potent of the three pesticides to alter all biochemical events. All these effects were observed at relatively high concentrations. However, bio-accumulation in sediments and aquatic organisms have been reported. Sea urchin eggs may then be in contact with very high concentrations of these pesticides in areas where these pesticides are not handled or stocked properly, and then develop into abnormal embryos.
