Résumé : In this paper we present results relative to Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) photowritten in two kinds of Ge-doped microstructured optical fiber cores devoted to sensing applications. A cross comparison between theoretical and experimental modal field patterns is carried out. We present the first values of spectral sensitivity of Bragg grating, in relation to the refractive index of the substance inserted into the holes.

Résumé : The propagation properties of microstructured optical fibers useful for sensing applications are reviewed. The interaction between light and sample can reach 95 % in singlemode hollow core fibers and examples of structures exhibiting such large overlap ratios are described. The generation of 300 nm and 700 nm flat continua of visible and IR light in a single highly nonlinear holey fiber, well suited for the detection of biological species by spectroscopy, is reported. The low temperature sensitivity of long period gratings and of the birefringence in holey fibers is attractive for sensors operating in varying environmental conditions.

Résumé : The x-ray reflection spectra, i.e. the reflected intensity as a function of the incident photon energy, of the HfO2/SiO2/Si system in the region of the O-K absorption edge are observed for various glancing angles. It is demonstrated that the variation of the glancing angle enables the depth profilometry of the sample. By using the Kramers-Kronig analysis, the reflection spectra are transformed into absorption spectra, from which the local physico-chemical environment of the oxygen atoms can be deduced. Thus we show in a non-destructuve way that the HfO2 amorphous film has a well defined structure with a thin superficial layer presenting defect points or various local atomic structures.

Ce protocole est mis en œuvre via une étude éléments finis permettant d'une part de valider les hypothèses expérimentales et d'autre part de modéliser le comportement du matériau par la conversion de données globales (forces-déplacements) en données locales (contraintes-déformations).

Résumé : The non-dispersed soft x-ray emission from a La/B4C periodic multilayer irradiated by monochromatic x-rays has been measured as a function of the incident photon energy in the 125-200 eV range for different scattering angles. We have observed a scattered intensity peak at incident energies which shift towards the low-energy side as the value of the scattering angle increases. These observations are interpreted as Raman scattering by the 5p level of lanthanum assisted by Bragg diffraction from the lattice of the periodic multilayer. A simple model based upon the laws of energy and momentum conservation enables us to account for the variation of the incident energy associated with the Bragg-Raman peak.

Résumé : BACKGROUND: Since the Edmonton trial in 2000, increasing numbers of transplant centers have been implementing islet transplantation programs. Some institutions have elected to associate in multicenter networks, such as the Swiss-French GRAGIL (Groupe Rhin-Rh?Alpes-Gen? pour la Transplantation d'Ilots de Langerhans) consortium. METHODS: All pancreata offers to the University of Geneva Cell Isolation and Transplantation Center from within the network in 2002 and 2003 were reviewed. Islet preparations were attributed to the most suitable recipient on a centrally managed waiting list. All shipments were performed by ambulance in less than 5 hr. RESULTS: Over the period of study, 260 pancreata were offered, from a total of 1,304 cadaveric donors in the four allocation regions (20%). Fifty-two patients were on the waiting list at any time during this 2-year period. The percentage of organs offered varied in the range of 0.5% to 42%, depending on region of origin, with a correlation with number of patients on the waiting list in each region. Of these, 104 (40%) were accepted for processing. Ninety-two pancreata were actually processed, resulting in 42 islet preparations being transplanted. The number of international equivalents of transplanted preparations was 378,500+/-16,000 versus 165,400+/-15,400 (P<0.0001) for nontransplanted preparations. Total cold ischemia time was 6+/-0.3 hr for transplanted preparations versus 6.7+/-0.4 hr for nontransplanted preparations (not significant). CONCLUSIONS.: A high rate of pancreas offers, successful isolation, and islet transplantation can be achieved in multicenter networks such as GRAGIL. Such an approach can expand both the donor pool and the recipient population.

Résumé : Offshore Ecuador, the Carnegie Ridge is a volcanic ridge with a carbonate sediment drape. During the SALIERI Cruise, multibeam bathymetry was collected across Carnegie Ridge with the Simrad EM120 of the R/V SONNE. The most conspicuous features discovered on the Carnegie Ridge are fields of circular closed depressions widely distributed along the mid-slope of the northern and southern flanks of the ridge between 1500 and 2600 m water depth. These circular depressions are 1–4 km wide and typically 100–400 m deep. Most are flat floored and some are so densely packed that they form a honeycomb pattern. The depressions were carved into the ridge sedimentary blanket, which consists of carbonate sediment and has been dated from upper Miocene to upper Pleistocene. Several hypotheses including pockmark origin, sediment creeping, paleo-topography of the volcanic basement, effects of subbottom currents, and both marine and subaerial karstic origins are discussed. We believe that underwater dissolution process merits the most serious consideration regarding the origin of the closed depression

Résumé : Exciton spin relaxation is investigated in single epitaxially grown semiconductor quantum dots in order to test the expected spin relaxation quenching in this system. We study the polarization anisotropy of the photoluminescence signal emitted by isolated quantum dots under steady-state or pulsed non-resonant excitation. We find that the longitudinal exciton spin relaxation time is strikingly short ($\leq$100 ps) even at low temperature. This result breaks down the picture of a frozen exciton spin in quantum dots.
