Résumé : Motivated by recent experiments on an S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, we investigate the Heisenberg J1-J2 model with ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2. Classically the ground state displays Neel long range order with 12 non-coplanar sublattices. The order parameter has the symmetry of a cuboctahedron so that it fully breaks SO(3) as well as the spin-flip symmetry, and we expect from the latter a Z2 symmetry breaking pattern. As might be expected from the Mermin-Wagner theorem in two dimensions, the SO(3) symmetry is restored by thermal fluctuations while the Z2 symmetry breaking persists up to a finite temperature. A complete study of S=1/2 exact spectra reveals that the classical order subsists for quantum spins in a finite range of parameters. First order spin wave calculations give the range of existence of this phase and the renormalisations at T=0 of the order parameters associated to both symmetry breakings. This phase is destroyed by quantum fluctuations for a small but finite J2/|J1|=3 consistently with exact spectra studies which indicate a gapped phase.

Résumé : Additional vertebrates and ostracods from the bituminous shale of the Khao Loc Formation at Tong Vai, Ha Giang Province, northern Vietnam, corroborate its correlation with the upper part of the Xishancun (Xiaxishancun) Formation and the lower part of the Xitun and Lianhuashan formations of South China, and its Middle to Late Lochkovian age. The variations in morphology and ornamentation of the galeaspid Polybranchiaspis liaojaoshanensis from Tong Vai are discussed and regarded as possibly size and growth-related. A new acanthothoracid placoderm with a very deep dorsal process is described from Tong Vai and the specific distinction between the antiarchs Minicrania lissa from TongVai and M. lirouyii fromYunnan is supported by additional characters. Petalichthyid placoderms are recorded from this locality for the first time, and the skull of a juvenile youngolepidid sarcopterygian is described. Eurypterid fragments and a phyllocarid crustacean are also recorded from the Khao Loc Formation. A new species of the chonetid brachiopod genus Tulynetes, endemic to northern Vietnam, is described from the Pragian Mia Le Formation at Cu Le, Bac Kan Province, a new locality which yields a large diversity of taxa with outstanding preservation.

Résumé : Results of powder X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering studies on the phase transitions in Sr1−xCaxTiO3 (SCT) are presented for x=0.04, 0.06 and 0.12 in the temperature range 8–473 K. It is proposed that the space group of SCT in the composition range 0.06less-than-or-equals, slantxless-than-or-equals, slant0.35 is Imma with a0b-b- tilt system and not I4/mcm with a0a0c- tilt system, as assumed by earlier workers. The lowering of the crystal symmetry from I4/mcm to Imma is supported by the observation of additional Raman lines, in agreement with the factor group analysis for the Imma space group. The structural Eg mode, characteristics of the non-cubic phase, is shown to be present even in the cubic phases of x=0.06 and x=0.12 but not of x=0.04 indicating the change in the local structure of the cubic phase of SCT for xgreater-or-equal, slanted0.06. The presence of symmetry forbidden TO2 mode in the Raman spectra of the cubic phase of SCT for x<0.06 and its absence for xgreater-or-equal, slanted0.06 provides yet another characteristic feature distinguishing the I4/mcm and Imma space groups. The implications of the change in the tilt system from a0a0c- to a0b-b- on the development of the polar order is also discussed.

Résumé : BACKGROUND: Coxiella burnetii causes the common worldwide zoonotic infection, Q fever. It has been previously suggested that patients who had recovered from acute Q fever (whether symptomatic or otherwise) may be at increased risk of ischaemic heart disease. We undertook this study to determine if past infection with Coxiella burnetii, the aetiological agent of Q fever, is a risk factor for the subsequent development of ischaemic heart disease. METHODS: A nested case-control study within the Prospective Epidemiological Study of Myocardial Infarction (PRIME). The PRIME study is a cohort study of 10,593 middle-aged men undertaken in France and Northern Ireland in the 1990s. A total of 335 incident cases of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) were identified and each case was matched to 2 IHD free controls. Q fever seropositivity was determined using a commercial IgG ELISA method. RESULTS: Seroprevalence of Q fever in the controls from Northern Ireland and France were 7.8% and 9.0% respectively. No association was seen between seropositivity and age, smoking, lipid levels, or inflammatory markers. The unadjusted odds ratio (95% CI) for Q fever seropositivity in cases compared to controls was 0.95 (0.59, 1.57). The relationship was substantially unaltered following adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors and potential confounders. CONCLUSION: Serological evidence of past infection with C. burnetii was not found to be associated with an increased risk of IHD.

Résumé : This paper is devoted to the numerical simulation of wave breaking. It presents the results of a numerical workshop that was held during the conference LOMA04. The objective is to compare several mathematical models (compressible or incompressible) and associated numerical methods to compute the flow field during a wave breaking over a reef. The methods will also be compared with experiments.

Résumé : La Côte d’Azur n’est ni le Japon, ni la Californie, loin s’en faut, mais la menace sismique y est réelle. Et pourtant la prévention s’y heurte toujours à une prise de conscience insuffisante. D’où, à l’instar de ce qui se pratique, avec succès, dans des pays plus sismiques, la réalisation d’études de scénario qui devraient permettre l’élaboration d’une politique de prévention.
