Résumé : This paper investigates the computation of the eigenmodes of the Laplacian operator in multi-connected three-dimensional spherical spaces. General mathematical results and analytical solutions for lens and prism spaces are presented. Three complementary numerical methods are developed and compared with our analytic results and previous investigations. The cosmological applications of these results are discussed, focusing on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. In particular, whereas in the Euclidean case too-small universes are excluded by present CMB data, in the spherical case, candidate topologies will always exist even if the total energy density parameter of the universe is very close to unity.

Résumé : FixJ is a two-domain response regulator involved in nitrogen fixation in Sinorhizobium meliloti. Recent X-ray characterization of both the native (unphosphorylated) and the active (phosphorylated) states of the protein identify conformational changes of the beta4-alpha4 loop and the conserved residue Phe101 as the key switches in activation. These structures also allowed investigation of the transition between conformations of this two-component regulatory receiver domain by molecular dynamics simulations. The path for the conformational change was studied with a distance constraint directing the system from one state to the other. The simulations provide evidence for a correlation between the conformation of the beta4-alpha4 loop and the orientation of the residue Phe101. A model presenting the sequence of events during the activation/deactivation process is discussed.

Résumé : Devant l'augmentation des populations de cervidés (cerfs et chevreuils) au cours des dernières décennies et en raison des conflits engendrés par l'apparente généralisation des dégâts en forêt, les ministères concernés de l'agriculture et de l'environnement ont décidé de mettre en place un observatoire des dégâts. Le but de cet observatoire était d'évaluer précisément les préjudices subis par la forêt et d'explorer les solutions envisageables pour réduire voire supprimer les dégâts. Un comité national mis en place depuis 1997 rassemble différents acteurs concernés par le sujet. Les études ont été conduites par le Cemagref et l'ONCFS. Le Cemagref a été chargé de l'étude de l'importance des dégâts commis par les cervidés en forêt et l'ONCFS a pris en charge l'étude du fonctionnement du plan de chasse. Le but de cet article est de faire un état des lieux de la situation des dégâts forestiers dans le département des Vosges à la lumière des travaux de cet observatoire.

Résumé : A biologically inspired integrated model of different hippocampal subsystems makes a distinction between place cells (PC) within the entorhinal cortex (EC) (diffuse) or dentate gyrus (segregated), and transition cells (TC) in CA3-CA1 that encode transitions between events. These two types of codes support two kinds of hippocampo-cortical cognitive maps: a context-independent map in the subiculum and EC essentially encodes the spatial layout of the environment thanks to a local dominance of ideothetic movement-related information over allothetic (visual) information, and a task- and temporal context-dependent map based on the TC in CA3-CA1 allows the encoding, in higher-order structures, of maps as graphs resulting from combinations of learned sequences of events. The dominantly spatial and the temporal-task-dependent maps are permanently stored in the parietal cortex and the pre-frontal cortex respectively. On the basis of these two maps, two distinct goal-oriented navigation strategies were designed in experimental robotic paradigms: one based on a (population) vector code of the location-actions pairs to learn and implement to reach the goal, and the other based on linking TC together as conditioning chains that are implemented under the top-down guidance of drives and motivations

Résumé : This project aims at providing planners with a grid which would allow a comparison between Best Management Practices (BMPs) in terms of environmental efficiency, economic cost and potential acceptability by farmers. A comparison between different existing or simulated BMPs (Best Management Practices) has been carried out through a cost/effectiveness assessment along with the study of their acceptability by farmers on seven European watersheds in a multidisciplinary framework which includes eleven research teams. Effectivity has been assessed as the evolution of water quality resulting from BMPs' implementation in experimental watersheds. Particular efforts is being carried out to improve BMPs representation in hydrological models, as they can take various forms from landscape structures modifications to agronomic recommendations. Spatial modelling, at various scales, is used to define critical areas where efforts should be concentrated. For costs, efforts concern the evaluation of both direct and indirect costs induced by BMPs implementation. When studying diffuse pollution, individual contributions and de-pollution costs were not known and had to be assessed. Direct costs are estimated through the definition of contract menus in a Principal/Agent modelling framework, or, depending on the available data, with linearly optimised profit functions. Indirect costs have been considered as being the impact of BMPs on all other branches of the economy and were evaluated by using a general equilibrium model. A cost/effectiveness ratio was calculated for each studied BMP, allowing a comparison of possible alternatives. Unfortunately farmers tend not to apply BMPs as would be desirable. Possible explanations include their poor commitment to environmental improvements and their practice of insufficiently implementing BMPs. Extensive interviews have been carried out to account for the social dimension of farmers' decision making process. In addition, complementary interviews with land managers helped defining practices already implemented and problems that have already been encountered. This work aims at defining new negociative implementation methods which will be evaluated in a demonstration project involving both local land managers and farmers.
