Résumé : We study theoretically a scheme in which particles from an incident beam are trapped in a potential well when colliding with particles already present in the well. The balance between the arrival of new particles and the evaporation of particles from the trapped cloud leads to a steady-state that we characterize in terms of particle number and temperature. For a cigar shaped potential, different longitudinal and transverse evaporation thresholds can be chosen. We show that a resonance occur when the transverse evaporation threshold coincides with the energy of the incident particles. It leads to a dramatic increase in phase space density with respect to the incident beam

Résumé : The efficacy and safety of coronary stent implantation depend on the mechanical features of these devices when deployed in atheromatous lesions of various morphologies. We evaluated the trackability, flexibility, and conformability of 17 coronary stents using specific mechanical bench tests. The quantifications used a dynamometer for assessment of trackability (maximal strength) and flexibility (stiffness) and a 3D optical gauging machine for assessment of conformability (distance between stent and arterial wall in a curvature). The maximal strength (measuring the trackability) ranged respectively from 0.24 ± 0.06 and 0.38 ± 0.03 N (Seaquest) to 1.31 ± 0.42 and 1.34 ± 0.35 N (Carbostent), concerning respectively curvatures of 90° (P < 0.0001) and 135° (P < 0.0001). The stiffness (measuring the flexibility) ranged from 0.53 ± 0.16 (Seaquest) to 1.28 ± 0.10 N/mm (NIR Royal; P < 0.0001). The mean distance between stent and external curvature (external conformability) ranged from 0.15 ± 0.06 mm (S7) to 0.57 ± 0.4 mm (NIR Royal; P < 0.0001). The mean distance between stent and internal curve (internal conformability) ranged from 0.26 ± 0.13 (S7) to 0.44 ± 0.12 mm (S670; P < 0.0001). These results may influence the choice of a particular stent adapted to a specific coronary anatomy.

Résumé : Deposits elaborated by PVD processes are of great importance in mechanical industry, which requires high performance tools with always increasing lifetime. Outstanding physical and chemical properties have been recently obtained with a new generation of coatings, characterized by the coexistence of two nanometric phases. Such phase distribution is achieved either by successive deposition of nanolayers of different nature (named multilayer or 2D material) or by dispersing crystalline nanodomains into an amorphous matrix (named nanocomposite or 3D material). Deposited onto tool steels, these coatings can be a solution to sustain high stresses encountered in severe machining because, in such conditions, coated parts have not only to fulfil high tribologic properties, but also to be thermally resistant. This paper presents some data concerning the oxidation behaviour of coated pieces in relation to the coating nanostructure. Nanocomposite magnetron sputtered TiBN, as well as arc evaporated multilayered TiN/CrN deposits are investigated in comparison with microstructured TiAlN, TiN or CrN layers. Nature of oxides developed during 24 hours at 700°C in air is determined by XRD and observed by SEM, while protective potentialities (oxidation critical temperature and kinetic parameters) are deduced from thermogravimetric analysis. Whatever the configuration, 2D or 3D, a beneficial influence of the nanostructure is observed on the corrosion resistance at high temperature. Corrosion rates are particularly decreased for CrN base coatings, whereas TiN coating leads to a thick cracked rutile layer, damaging from an oxidation point of view. Oxidation protection due to multilayered CrN/TiN deposit is significant, which is explained by the fact that, the formed Cr2O3 layer is a barrier against the progression of the oxide layer.

Résumé : Objective. Because the optimal cyclophosphamide (CY) treatment duration for severe polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) without vir-us infection and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) has not been established, we conducted a trial to compare the effectiveness of 6 versus 12 CY pulses given in combination with corticosteroids (CS). Methods. Sixty-five (18 PAN, 47 MPA) previously untreated patients were randomized to receive 12 (n = 34) or 6 (n 31) CY pulses combined with CS. PAN and MPA were histologically proven or met ACR criteria. All patients presented greater than or equal to1 factor of severity according to the five factor score (FFS). CY pulses were administered every 2 weeks for 1 month, then every 4 weeks. The end point of the study was the number of events (relapses and/or deaths) occurring in each group, analyzed according to an intention-to-treat strategy. The outcome was evaluated by Cox proportional hazards analysis. Results. The baseline characteristics were similar for both groups. The mean (+/- SD) followup was 32 +/- 21 months. Survival analysis showed a significantly lower relapse probability (P = 0.02; hazards ratio [HR] = 0.34) and higher event-free survival (P = 0.02, HR = 0.44) for the 12 CY-pulse group while the mortality rates were not significantly different (P = 0.47). Conclusion. These results suggest that 6 CY pulses are less effective than 12 CY pulses to treat severe PAN and MPA, particularly with respect to the risk of relapses.

Résumé : A comparison between different existing or simulated BMPs has been carried out through a cost/effectiveness assessment along with the study of their acceptability by farmers on eight European watersheds in a multidisciplinary framework involving eleven research teams. Water quality problems encountered and dealt with in this project for all eight watersheds include: high nitrate loads and concentrations at the outlet of the two western French watersheds associated with dairy production, high loads of phosphorus into lake Vico (Italy) associated with hazelnut plantations, high nitrate concentration in groundwater for two watersheds in Austria and Italy, high sediment loads at the outlet of a second Austrian watershed, acid water associated with artificial drainage of moraine soils in Finland, pesticide contamination in Norway. The comparison of different BMPs for a given watershed is built as a 6 steps framework :step 1 : describing the watershed, the general problematic (including the objective of the different actors) and of the main water quality problems. .step 2 : describing and computing the hydrology. Description of the model used, calibration and validation of the model, definition of critical areas and risky practices, assessment of their impact on total fluxes or concentrations, deduction of proposed BMPs, assessment of the ex ante effectiveness of each BMP.step 3 : describing the economics. Description of the diversity of farms, choice of the model to represent this diversity, results of model implementation (does this model provide an acute description of the statu quo situation ?), assessment of the consequences on introducing BMPs and ex ante cost of this introduction.step 4 : assessing the results of steps 2 and 3 to a cost/efficiency ratio for each BMP.step 5 : interviewing the farmers to assess the acceptability for each BMP.step 6 : comparing of the cost/efficiency ratio and the acceptability to build a selection grid.
