Résumé : Germline specific point mutations in the gene encoding fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) are associated with autosomal dominant human skeletal dysplasia and craniosynostosis syndromes. Mutations identical to the germinal activating mutations found in severe skeletal dysplasias have been identified in certain types of cancer: at low frequency in multiple myeloma and cervix carcinoma and at high frequency in bladder carcinoma. We analysed, by SSCP and sequencing, the prevalence of FGFR3 mutations in 116 primary tumours of various types (upper aerodigestive tract, oesophagus, stomach, lung and skin). The regions analysed encompassed all FGFR3 point mutations previously described in severe skeletal dysplasia and cancers. No mutations were detected in the tumour types examined, suggesting that FGFR3 mutations are restricted to a few tumour types, the evidence to date suggesting that they are very specific to bladder carcinomas.

Résumé : We propose a new image sonar segmentation by combining two complementary competencies. On the one hand, following an image processing approach, we aim at partitioning raw image data to provide a binary image. On the other hand, we take advantage of technological knowledge such as the principle of sonar image formation. For sonar images, grey-level histogram generally presents a single mode which entails a poor separation of two theoretical modes related to reverberation and shadow subpopulations of the image. The separation of these two modes is of critical interest in a further description of objects from their cast shadows. In this paper, an optimal filter is specified by a criterion which aims at changing the statistical properties of each area while making threshold value selection from the histogram easier. While minimizing the output pixels variance, pixel values in each region concentrate around the respective average value while, simultaneously, two distinct modes appear on the histogram of the filtered image. The minimum value found between the two modes in the smoothed histogram leads to the searched threshold. In addition, we show how filter aspect depends as well on the image sonar resolution as on sonar parameters.

Résumé : This paper discusses the potential of a L-band 2-D microwave interferometric radiometer for monitoring surface variables over land surfaces. The instrument is the payload of the SMOS Mission (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), selected for phase A studies by the European Space Agency (ESA) in answer to the call for Earth Explorer Opportunity Missions. The L-band radiometer is based on an innovative bi-dimensional aperture synthesis concept. This sensor has new and significant capabilities, especially in terms of multi-angular viewing configurations.

Résumé : This paper will describe the SMOS concept in terms of instrument (characteristics) investigates the main aspects of the retrieval capabilities of the 2-D microwave interferometer for monitoring soil moisture, vegetation biomass and surface temperature. The analysis is based on model inversion taking into account the instrument characteristics. The standard error of estimate of the surface variables is computed as a function of the sensor configuration system and of the uncertainties associated with the spatial measurements. The inversion process is based on a standard minimization routine that computes both retrieved variables and standard error associated with the retrievals. The potential of SMOS, depending on the view angle configuration and the use of the sole 1.4 GHz is investigated. The analysis investigates the possibility to retrieve one, two or the three surface variables, depending on the system configuration. These questions are key issues to define the observation configuration of SMOS that meets the scientific requirements and the technical constraints of the spatial missions.

Résumé : Visualizations of the leading edge cavity on a four-bladed inducer working with refrigerant 114 are presented. The evolution of the cavity length with the cavitation number is given for three different temperatures. These data are used to estimate the thermodynamic effect in R114. In addition, the onset of cavitation instabilities (alternate blade cavitation and rotating cavitation) are determined from the analysis of pressure fluctuations. The thermodynamic effect which affects the onset of instabilities is also estimated and compared to the one deduced from visualizations.

Résumé : In this paper, we give a short presentation of the project ForDiMHyS which consists of experimental studies and model establishment (or development) of the kinetics of FORmation and Dissociation of Methane Hydrates in Sediments. We focus on the details of the experimental set-up which is newly, specially designed for this study in the preliminary step of the project. The four French academic teams and two PhD thesis are involved in the ForDiMHyS project on the period 2000-2004. The financial support is given by the five French Partners. The project consists of two-step programs; firstly the data acquisition from the laboratory experimental set-up and secondly simulation of methane production from methane hydrate fields.

Résumé : Some new device structures are developed to take advantage of the superiority of silicon carbide over silicon for high voltage and high temperature conditions. That’s the case of the JBS rectifier (junction barrier Schottky) and the VJFET (vertical junction field effect transistor) who exhibit very interesting characteristics: JBS with low voltage drop (1V) and high breakdown voltage (2.5 kV), and VJFET with a RON close to 15 m.cm² and VBR=1800V. The aim of this paper is to show the first experimental results of our 4H-SiC current limiting device. This device limits the current which flows through it as the bias voltage between its two contacts increases. The static curves obtained (T=300 K) show a current limitation ability with a saturation voltage ranging from 10V to 15V. The electrical device characterization shows a RON150 m.cm² and a current density of 100 A/cm² under 50V. The forward conduction is assumed by an N type implanted channel (doping species: nitrogen) over an P+ implanted layer (doping species: aluminum). The post-implantation annealing of 1700 °C/30 mn leads to a good electrical activation (80%) of the NCHANNEL/P+ layer (analyzed by C(V) and SIMS methods) and a good channel mobility (100 cm2.V-1.s-1 for a 31017 cm-3 N compensated doping concentration).
