Résumé : Using measurements of QT/RR slopes with a computerized Holter system, QT interval dynamicity was evaluated in 19 patients with normal structural heart before and 2 months after oral treatment with verapamil prescribed for paroxysmal atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia. Verapamil significantly shortened QT at low heart rates, mainly in the diurnal period, and this characteristic may explain, in part, the previously reported protective effect of verapamil against torsades de pointes.

Résumé : Detailed seafloor mapping in the area east of Taiwan revealed trench-parallel stretching and folding of the Ryukyu forearc and lateral motion of the accretionary wedge under oblique convergence. East of 122ø40'E, a steep accretionary wedge is elongated in an E-W direction. A major transcurrent right-lateral strike-slip fault accommodates the strain partitioning caused by an oblique convergence of 40 ø. A spectacular out-of-sequence thrust may be related to the subduction of a structural high lying in the axis of the N-S trending Gagua Ridge. This asperity is likely responsible for the uplift of the accretionary wedge and forearc basement and may have augmented strain partitioning by increasing the coupling between the two plates. West of 122ø40'E, the low-taper accretionary wedge is sheared in a direction subparallel to the convergence vector with respect to the Ryukyu Arc. The bayonet shape of the southern Ryukyu Arc slope partly results from the recent (re)opening of the southern Okinawa Trough at a rate of about 2 to 4 cm/yr. Right-lateral shearing of the sedimentary forearc with respect to the nonlinear Ryukyu backstop generates trench-parallel extension in the forearc sediment sequence at dilational jogs and trench-parallel folding at compressive jogs. The Hoping Basin lies above a diffuse trench/trench/fault (TTF) or TFF unstable triple junction moving toward the south along a N-S transform zone which accommodates the southward drift of the Ryukyu Arc with respect to Eurasia.

Résumé : The NetLander Mission will deploy four landers to the Martian surface. Each lander includes a network science payload with instrumentation for studying the interior of Mars, the atmosphere and the subsurface, as well as the ionospheric structure and geodesy. The NetLander Mission is the first planetary mission focusing on investigations of the interior of the planet and the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere. A broad consortium of national space agencies and research laboratories will implement the mission. It is managed by CNES (the French Space Agency), with other major players being FMI (the Finnish Meteorological Institute), DLR (the German Space Agency), and other research institutes. According to current plans, the NetLander Mission will be launched in 2005 by means of an Ariane V launch, together with the Mars Sample Return mission. The landers will be separated from the spacecraft and targeted to their locations on the Martian surface several days prior to the spacecraft's arrival at Mars. The landing system employs parachutes and airbags. During the baseline mission of one Martian year, the network payloads will conduct simultaneous seismological, atmospheric, magnetic, ionospheric, geodetic measurements and ground penetrating radar mapping supported by panoramic images. The payloads also include entry phase measurements of the atmospheric vertical structure. The scientific data could be combined with simultaneous observations of the atmosphere and surface of Mars by the Mars Express Orbiter that is expected to be functional during the NetLander Mission's operational phase. Communication between the landers and the Earth would take place via a data relay onboard the Mars Express Orbiter.

Résumé : BACKGROUND:
The purpose of the study was to analyze serologic and molecular markers of the GB virus type C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) infection in voluntary blood donors from Southeastern France. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Sera were tested for the presence of GBV-C/HGV RNA by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and that of antibodies to the GBV-C/HGV E2 (anti-E2) antigen by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A first cohort (1 660 blood donors) was tested prospectively and a second cohort (238 samples with hepatitis markers) was tested retrospectively. Donors in the prospective study were questioned for possible risk factors of virus transmission. Amplification products were sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: Approximately 2.6 percent of individuals accepted for blood donation and 15.4 percent with positive hepatitis C virus serologic tests carried GBV-C/HGV RNA. Anti-E2 was detected in these two populations in approximately 12 percent and 48 percent of donors, respectively. Moderate relative risks were found only in tattooed or pierced individuals (1.82) and health care workers (2.45). Almost all strains were located in the same phylogenetic branch as HGV Group 2. CONCLUSION: Though a large proportion of the donors tested have been in contact with GBV-C/HGV, no elevated relative risk of infection was identified. The phylogenetic distribution of viral strains suggests that the infection is endemic in this population.

Résumé : Background: A variety of bacterial adaptative cellular responses to environmental stimuli are mediated by two-component signal transduction pathways. In these phosphorelay cascades, histidine kinases transphosphorylate a conserved aspartate in the receiver domain, a conserved module in the response regulator superfamily. The main effect of this phosphorylation is to alter the conformation of the response regulator in order to modulate its biological function. The response regulator FixJ displays a typical modular arrangement, with a phosphorylatable N-terminal receiver domain and a C-terminal DNA-binding domain. In the symbiotic bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti, phosphorylation of this response regulator activates transcription of nitrogen-fixation genes. Results: The crystal structures of the phosphorylated and of the unphosphorylated N-terminal receiver domain of FixJ (FixJN) were solved at 2.3 Å and 2.4 Å resolution, respectively. They reveal the environment of the phosphoaspartate in the active site and the specific conformational changes leading to activation of the response regulator. Phosphorylation of the conserved aspartate induces major structural changes in the β4-α4 loop, and in the signaling surface α4-β5 that mediates dimerization of the phosphorylated full-length response regulator. A site-directed mutant at this protein-protein interface decreases the affinity of the phosphorylated response regulator for the fixK promoter tenfold. Conclusions: The cascade of phosphorylation-induced conformational changes in FixJN illustrates the role of conserved residues in stabilizing the phosphoryl group in the active site, triggering the structural transition and achieving the post-phosphorylation signaling events. We propose that these phosphorylation-induced conformational changes underly the activation of response regulators in general.

Résumé : Detection of changes in the flow rate of expelled fluids in accretionary prisms by monitoring of electric and magnetic fields is discussed. A numerical model of the electric and magnetic fields associated with fluid flow variations at the Nankai Trough is presented which gives a numerical solution of the coupled system of electric convection currents and conduction currents that directly determines the magnetic anomaly itself. Measurements in a borehole located between two vents are shown to be well adapted to detection of fluid flow variations using the vertical gradient of the electric potential and the horizontal magnetic field. The vertical electric field is about 10 mV/km up to 500 m depth where there is a lithologic reflector and about 50 mV/km below this reflector. The horizontal gradient of the magnetic field is 2 nT/km at the seafloor. Modelization with a lower fault conductivity and a larger décollement thickness has also been modeled. The vertical gradient of the horizontal magnetic field is ~5 to 15 nT/km. A variation of 3 mV and 1.5 to 3 nT at 600 m depth in a borehole could reveal a fluid flow rate variation of 20%, which is a reasonable fluid flow change based on some observations at short-scale time. Since a 1.5 to 3 nT anomaly seems easier to detect than a 3 mV anomaly, it is likely that the variation of the magnetic field would more sensitively reveal fluid flow variations. When monitoring the magnetic field at the seafloor, a change of 0.4 nT/km in the horizontal gradient could reveal a fluid flow rate variation of 20%.
