Résumé : Matrix manipulation programs are easily developed using a visual language. For signal processing, a graph of tasks operates on arrays. Each task iterates the same code on different patterns tilling these arrays. In this case visual specifications of dependencies between the pattern elements are enough to define an application. From the Array-OL language developed by Thomson Marconi Sonar, we propose a graphical environment, Gaspard, dedicated to the data-parallel paradigm. Only elementary SPMD tasks are textual. A full environment has been implemented including the graphical editor, a code transformer and a code generator for SMP computers.

Résumé : In March 1997, a strong westerly wind event (WWE) occurred in the western equatorial Pacific prior to the 1997-1998 E1 Nifio event. It produced downwelling Kelvin waves that interacted non linearly with the surface temperature, salinity and zonal current fronts located at the eastern edge of the warm-fresh pool (EEWP). This non-linear interaction locally increased zonal currents by a factor of three compared to a theoretical linear response, and advected the EEWP at an unexpected rate (-l m/s) to which the ocean-atmosphere coupled system may have been responding rapidly to trigger E1 Nino conditions.

Résumé : Within the framework of achievement motivation, the authors assessed gender and ethnic differences for preferential choices of social situations of achievement (e.g., academic, sport, art) and motivational goals pursued. A contents analysis of the essays of 202 pupils (boys and girls of Maghrebian and European origin) from a suburb of Paris was used. The subjects of Maghrebian origin tended to choose the school for social situations of achievement, while those of European origin appreciated the possibility for sport and art. Gender differences were more specifically pronounced for the Maghrebian girls. Concerning motivational goals, boys showed a less-marked orientation towards mastery goals than girls, whatever the social situation of achievement. Finally, the data analysis revealed that the nature of the social domain of achievement influences whether adolescents become intrinsically or extrinsically motivated.

Résumé : Coronary artery thrombosis is often initiated by abrupt disruption of the atherosclerotic plaque and activation of platelets on the subendothelial layers in the disrupted plaque. The extracellular matrix protein collagen is the most thrombogenic constituent of the subendothelial layer; therefore, a selective inhibition of the collagen activation pathway in platelets may provide strong antithrombotic protection while preserving other platelet functions. Here we demonstrate that treatment of mice with a monoclonal antibody against the activating platelet collagen receptor glycoprotein VI (GPVI; JAQ1) results in specific depletion of the receptor from circulating platelets and abolished responses of these cells to collagen and collagen-related peptides (CRPs). JAQ1-treated mice were completely protected for at least 2 wk against lethal thromboembolism induced by infusion of a mixture of collagen (0.8 mg/kg) and epinephrine (60 microg/ml). The tail bleeding times in JAQ1-treated mice were only moderately increased compared with control mice probably because the treatment did not affect platelet activation by other agonists such as adenosine diphosphate or phorbol myristate acetate. These results suggest that GPVI might become a target for long-term prophylaxis of ischemic cardiovascular diseases and provide the first evidence that it is possible to specifically deplete an activating glycoprotein receptor from circulating platelets in vivo.

Résumé : Detailed measurements of electron spectra and charges from the interaction of 10 Hz, 600 mJ laser pulses in the relativistic regime with a gas jet have been done over a wide range of intensities (10^18–2×10^19 W/cm^2) and electron densities (1.5×10^18–1.5×10^20 cm^−3), from the “classical laser wakefield regime” to the “self-modulated laser wakefield” regime. In the best case the maximum electron energy reaches 70 MeV. It increases at lower electron densities and higher laser intensities. A total charge of 8 nC was measured. The presented simulation results indicate that the electrons are accelerated mainly by relativistic plasma waves, and, to some extent, by direct laser acceleration.

Résumé : Amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting of three pairs of Meloidogyne incognita near-isogenic lines (NILs) was used to identify markers differential between nematode genotypes avirulent or virulent against the tomato Mi resistance gene. One of these sequences, present only in the avirulent lines, was used as a probe to screen a cDNA library from second-stage juveniles (J2s) and allowed cloning of a cDNA encoding a secretory protein. The putative full-length cDNA, named map-1, encoded a 458 amino acid (aa) protein containing a predictive N-terminal secretion signal peptide. The MAP-1 sequence did not show any significant similarity to proteins deposited in databases. The internal part of the protein, however, was characterized by highly conserved repetitive motives of 58 or 13 aa. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) experiments confirmed that map-1 expression was different between avirulent and virulent NILs. In PCR reactions, map-1-related sequences were amplified only in nematode populations belonging to the three species against which the Mi gene confers resistance: M. arenaria, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Polyclonal antibodies raised against a synthetic peptide deduced from the MAP-1 sequence strongly labeled J2 amphidial secretions in immunofluorescence microscopy assays, suggesting that MAP-1 may be involved in the early steps of recognition between (resistant) plants and (avirulent) nematodes.

Résumé : The SMOS L-band 2-D interferometer is based on an innovative concept of bi-dimensional aperture synthesis method. The instrument is a Y shaped structure consisting of 3 coplanar arms. The sensor has new and very significant capabilities especially in terms of multi-angular view configuration.. This paper will describe the SMOS concept in terms of instrument (characteristics) investigates the main aspects of the retrieval capabilities of the 2-D microwave interferometer for monitoring soil moisture, vegetation biomass and surface temperature. The analysis is based on model inversion taking into account the instrument characteristics. The standard error of estimate of the surface variables is computed as a function of the sensor configuration system and of the uncertainties associated with the spatial measurements. The inversion process is based on a standard minimisation routine that computes both retrieved variables and standard error associated with the retrievals. The potential of SMOS, depending on the view angle configuration and the use of the sole 1.4 GHz is investigated. These questions are key issues to define the observation configuration of SMOS that meets the scientific requirements and the technical constraints of the spatial missions.
