Résumé : Erythrocyte and blood platelet phospholipid compositions were studied in three elephant seals and two fur seals, two species of marine mammals living in the Subantarctic region feeding on preys rich in (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids. Results were compared with those reported for related species and humans. In erythrocytes, the phospholipid (PL) and cholesterol (CHOL) contents were lower in pinnipeds than in humans. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) levels were higher in elephant seals than in fur seals, with a reverse trend for phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylserine (PS). Both species had lower SM/PC ratios and PE plasmalogen concentrations than human. Erythrocytes were richer in (n-3) fatty acids (FA) in pinnipeds than in humans. In platelets, the PL content was lower and the CHOL content higher in elephant seals than in humans or in other phocid seal species studied to date. The SM/PC ratio was much higher than in other seal species or in man. In both species, the proportion of PE plasmalogens was higher in platelets than in erythrocytes. PL were more saturated in elephant seals than in fur seals. These results suggest that the erythrocytes and platelets of wild marine mammals may prove useful models to study the influence of dietary lipids on the structure and hemostatic function of these cells.

Résumé : Visually guided landmark navigation is based on space coding by hippocampal place cells (Pc)[2]. A biologically realistic architecture of cooperative-competitive associative networks (implemented as a control system for mobile agents) emulates place cell activity during local navigation (self and goal -localization, and route finding) in exploration and goal-retrieval paradigms. The system builds and stores panoramic views from landmarks and compares these views with current inputs. Mismatch induced low levels of recognition activity during exploration trigger a vigilance burst (by a mechanism inspired from septal modulation) which favors either the recognition of an alternative place category, or the creation of a new category. The sole implementation of visual ¿What¿ and ¿Where¿ information does not restrain the generality of the model since several modalities (proprioceptive and vestibular in particular) could cooperate to give rise to more robust place field spatial categories [5]. Providing the system with real visual inputs automatically extracted from a natural environment demonstrates that interspecies differences [6] in Pc coding (e.g. Pcs in rats vs. view cells in monkeys) result more from characteristics of the visual systems than from differences in Hs processing. Conversely, differences in Pc multiple codes within the same system result according to the model from different levels of processing and/or different degrees of multimodality. Each of these codes could be used within different navigational strategies a control system directly derived from the model allows a mobile agent to learn a few places in an environment, and their associated actions to perform in order to reach a goal. Generalization property of the model provides the capacity to join the goal from any place in the learned environment.

Résumé : The reaction of the ligands Ph2PCH2X (X = 2-oxazolinyl, I; or C(O)NPh2, II) with the half-sandwich molybdenum(III) precursors [Mo(η-C5R5)(μ-Cl)2]2 (R = H or Me) has been investigated. Ligand I reacts with both complexes to form the corresponding adducts [Mo(η-C5R5)Cl2(Ph2PCH2C3H4NO)] (R = H, 1; or Me, 2). The reaction between I and [MoCp*Cl4] (Cp* = η-C5Me5) affords [MoCp*Cl4(Ph2PCH2C3H4NO-κ1P)] as a kinetic isomer, which then transforms quantitatively to [MoCp*Cl3(Ph2PCH2C3H4NO-κ2P,N)]+Cl−, 3. Ligand II reacts with [MoCp(μ-Cl)2]2 (Cp = η-C5H5) to afford the adduct [CpMoCl2{Ph2PCH2C(O)NPh2-κ2P,O}], 4, as an equilibrium mixture of two isomers. Longer reaction times in CH2Cl2 lead to the molybdenum(IV) by-product [MoCpCl3{Ph2PCH2C(O)NPh2-κ2P,O}], 5. While ligand II does not react with [MoCp*(μ-Cl)2]2, it does so in the presence of 1 equivalent of AgBF4 to afford [MoCp*Cl2{Ph2PCH2C(O)NPh2-κ2P,O}][BF4], 6. Further reaction with CH2Cl2 leads to [MoCp*Cl3{Ph2PCH2C(O)NPh2-κ2P,O}] [BF4], 7. The direct reaction between [MoCp*Cl4] and ligand II affords [MoCp*Cl4{Ph2PCH2C(O)NPh2-κ1P}] 8 as a kinetic isomer which then slowly establishes a solvent-dependent equilibrium with the ionic isomer [MoCp*Cl3{Ph2PCH2C(O)NPh2-κ2P,O}]+ Cl−. The solid state structure of compounds 5 and 7 has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The chemical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical data indicate that ligand II has a greater hemilabile character than ligand I.

Résumé : Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are sedentary endoparasites causing severe damage to a wide variety of crops, including tomato. Among them, the parthenogenetic species Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita and M. javanica are of particular economic importance. The genetic diversity and relationships of 17 populations belonging to these three major species, either avirulent or virulent against the tomato Mi resistance gene, were investigated in order to determine whether (a)virulence of the nematodes could be related to their molecular fingerprints. Genomic polymorphisms between populations were assessed by using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, and data were treated by means of a multiple correspondence analysis. A total of 1550 polymorphic amplified DNA fragments were identified and used to compute the relationships between the populations. As expected, the three RKN species were clearly distributed into distinct groups, but combination of data for virulence phenotypes and DNA markers showed that clustering of populations was not associated with their (a)virulence against the tomato Mi resistance gene. Such a lack of correlation indicates that most of the observed DNA polymorphism is independent of virulence, which is presumably under host selection. This result demonstrates that virulent populations do not share a common origin, and strongly suggests that they might have appeared late after the establishment of these clonal lineages, as the result of independent mutational events.
