Résumé : This paper isconcerned with the characterization of elastic targets immersed in a fluid and submitted to an acoustic impulse. Time-frequency methods have already been used in the case of scatterers of simple geometric shape. We have chosen the wavelet transform for its particular properties, such as linearity and local analysis at Df/f=Cst. We have developped an algorithm based on the behavior of the phase of the transform, which enables us to extract modulation laws (related to the dispersion law of the phase velocity), even for close echoes. In the case of spherical elastic shells,we have applied this method to both experimental and simulated signals. We point out the good agreement between theoretical ans experimental results.

Résumé : The establishment of an endothelial lining on vascular grafts to obtain a highly thromboresistant surface in a clinical situation requires optimization of cell collection, quality, adhesion and growth. We have studied the conditions for collection, seeding and growth of human saphenous vein endothelial cells (HSVEC), on Dacron or Gore-Tex expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vascular grafts. Carefully handled veins, as opposed to veins obtained using the usual procedures for coronary bypass graft preparation, yielded a higher rate of successful culture (94% vs 43%) and reached confluence in primary culture sooner (9.4 +/- 3 days vs 13.4 +/- 4.5 days). HSVEC were seeded at a density of 6 x 10(3) cells/cm2 on graft fragments coated with fibronectin (FN) or Transglutine (TGL), a biological glue. There was no HSVEC adhesion on Dacron or PTFE without protein pretreatment of the artificial surface. FN improved HSVEC adhesion but there was no cell growth. Adhesion, doubling time and cell density at confluence on PTFE pretreated with TGL were similar to those on conventional tissue culture polystyrene (TCP) pretreated with TGL or FN. HSVEC adhesion on Dacron pretreated with TGL was lower than on TCP pretreated with TGL; the doubling time was similar but the density at confluence was 40% lower. We conclude that pretreatment of vascular grafts with TGL, besides being an alternative to preclotting of the Dacron graft, allows adhesion and growth to confluence of HSVEC on these surfaces.

Résumé : Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis, the amplifiable units of DNA (AUD) loci AUD6 and AUD90 of Streptomyces ambofaciens DSM40697 could be mapped in the wild-type genome within two adjacent AseI restriction fragments estimated to be about 75 and 850 kb. In addition, the genetic instability and formation of very large deletions were strictly correlated. Their sizes were estimated to range from 250 to more than 2,000 kb. These deletions affected the DNA region overlapping both amplifiable loci. PFGE also allowed us to localize the amplified DNA sequences and to establish their structure: amplification takes place at the AUD locus as a tandem array of the wild-type AUD sequence.

Résumé : We present a new method for computing quantum fluctuations of fields emitted by optical cavities containing atoms. The noise generation by atoms is described by atomic correlation functions. The parametric transformation of the fields by the atomic medium is described by susceptibility functions, as in linear response theory. The susceptibility functions and the correlation functions can be calculated as in the resonance fluorescence theory. The compatibility between dissipation and added fluctuations is ensured by general relations existing between these atomic functions.

Résumé : We discuss the opening mechanism of the Japan Sea in Miocene time using (1) tectonic and published paleomagnetic data along the eastern margin from the north of Hokkaido Island to Sado Island, (2) a mechanical model which is tested by small-scale physical modeling, and (3) crustal structure and bathymetric features in the Japan Sea which constrain our kinematic model and preopening reconstructions. Our main conclusions are the following. The eastern margin of the Japan Sea was, as a whole, a dextral shear zone about 100 km wide. This conclusion is supported by the existence of a ductile dextral shear zone in Central Hokkaido (Hidaka Mountains) and associated brittle deformation in western Hokkaido and northeastern Honshu. The stress field during the opening (which ended about 12 Ma ago at the end of the middle Miocene) changes from right-lateral transpression in the north to right-lateral transtension in the south. The western margin, along the Korean peninsula, during the same period, also was an active dextral shear zone. Paleomagnetic results indicate that clockwise rotations occurred in the south during the opening and counterclockwise rotations in the north. We propose a model of right-lateral pull-apart deformation with clockwise rotations of rigid blocks in the southern transtensional domain and counterclockwise rotations in the transpressional one. Small-scale physical models show that the clockwise rotation in transtension is possible provided that the eastern boundary (Pacific side) is free of stress. The opening stopped and compression subsequently began about 12 Ma ago. Finally, we show that the dextral shear, which is distributed over the whole Japan Sea area, is accommodated by N-S trending right-lateral faults and rotation of blocks located between these right-lateral faults.

Résumé : U-deposit hosted in hydrothermally altered tuffs in Mexico, together with weathering profiles from Cameroon were studied as natural analogues of radionuclide release and migration. Using petrological and spectroscopic methods (infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance), we have distinguished successive secondary mineral parageneses and the behaviour of radionuclides. In the U-deposit, the mineral parageneses show that uranium migration is mainly controlled by the redox potential and silica activity of the altering solutions. The high silica content of the solutions is caused by the intense alteration of volcanic rocks. Two types of secondary clay mineral parageneses are evidenced: a kaolinization, intense where uranium is accumulated in the welded tuffs, and a smectitization mainly developed in the underlying weakly welded tuffs. Several types of kaolinite have been defined according to their genesis (fillings in fissures and feldspar pseudomorphs), their location relative to a breccia pipe where uranium has accumulated (core and rim of the pipe; surrounding rhyolitic tuffs), and particle morphology, structural order and substitutional Fecontent. It is shown that the variations of the concentration of paramagnetic defect centres, always more than ten times as important than those measured in weathering kaolinites, are only correlated to the location of the kaolinites. The highest values correspond to the breccia pipe kaolinites, e.g. kaolinites located in the uranium accumulation zones. Moreover, one or two main defects centres are detected depending on the intimate association of kaolinites with uranium-bearing minerals. Besides, in weathering kaolinites from U-depleted laterites, defect centre concentrations are correlated to the total Fe203 content in bulk samples. This means that the defect centre acts as a memory of the travel of uranium when this element was sorbed onto iron gels in the first stage of weathering. It is concluded that paramagnetic defect centres in kaolinites might allow an efficient fingerprint of successive irradiations in the natural analogues under study and could be an useful tool to control radionuclides migration through kaolinite-containing clayey materials such as those used for waste repository. A better understanding of radiation efficiency as well as accurate dose-ratekaolinite-containing clayey materials such as those used for waste reposit estimation are needed for a quantitative tracing of the migration ofA better understanding of radiation efficiency as well as accurate dose-ratekaolin radionuclide elements. With this aim, a simulation has been undertaken withestimation are needed for a quantitative tracing of the migration of various radiations sources. We have determined for each irradiation the parameters of the paramagnetic centres created in order to understand the way they are forming. The knowledge of the parameters governing the formation and the stability of the radiation centres in kaolinites allow to use this mineral as a natural dosimeter.

Résumé : Reflectance spectra are studied for both symmetric and asymmetric double-quantum-well structures separated by intermediate barriers with various thicknesses. It is shown that the interwell couplings versus the tunneling of the carriers across the barrier has a significant influence on the optical transition properties. Quantitative analyses are presented, which help to identify a number of transitions involving excited states, in asymmetric double wells. A theoretical model agrees with experimental results in several aspects: the interband transition energies, the transition probabilities, and the broadening of the reflectance structures. The effects of interfacial roughness and alloy disorder, in both symmetric and asymmetric systems, are carefully analyzed, which provides a new insight into the broadening of the optical transitions, due to interfacial morphology.
