Résumé : Accurate and timely monitoring of forest canopy heights is critical for assessing forest dynamics, biodiversity, carbon sequestration as well as forest degradation and deforestation. Recent advances in deep learning techniques, coupled with the vast amount of spaceborne remote sensing data offer an unprecedented opportunity to map canopy height at high spatial and temporal resolutions. Current techniques for wall-to-wall canopy height mapping correlate remotely sensed 2D information from optical and radar sensors to the vertical structure of trees using LiDAR measurements. While studies using deep learning algorithms have shown promising performances for the accurate mapping of canopy heights, they have limitations due to the type of architectures and loss functions employed. Moreover, mapping canopy heights over tropical forests remains poorly studied, and the accurate height estimation of tall canopies is a challenge due to signal saturation from optical and radar sensors, persistent cloud covers and sometimes the limited penetration capabilities of LiDARs. Here, we map heights at 10 m resolution across the diverse landscape of Ghana with a new vision transformer (ViT) model optimized concurrently with a classification (discrete) and a regression (continuous) loss function. This model achieves better accuracy than previously used convolutional based approaches (ConvNets) optimized with only a continuous loss function. The ViT model results show that our proposed discrete/continuous loss significantly increases the sensitivity for very tall trees (i.e., > 35m), for which other approaches show saturation effects. The height maps generated by the ViT also have better ground sampling distance and better sensitivity to sparse vegetation in comparison to a convolutional model. Our ViT model has a RMSE of 3.12m in comparison to a reference dataset while the ConvNet model has a RMSE of 4.3m.

Résumé : MiniCACTUS is a monolithic sensor prototype optimised for timing measurement of charged particles. It has been designed in a standard 150 nm CMOS process without dedicated amplification layer. It is intended as a demonstrator chip for future large scale timing detectors, like upgrades of timing detectors at LHC, or future high energy physics detector projects. The sensor features an active array of 2 x 4 diodes, analog and digital Front-Ends (FEs), a slow control interface, and bias circuitry programmable through internal DACs. The sensing element is a deep n-well/p-substrate diode. Thanks to the optimized guard-rings surrounding the whole chip, it is possible to apply safely more than 450 V on the high-resistivity substrate allowing fast charge collection. The baseline pixel dimensions are 1.0 mm x 1.0 mm and 0.5 mm x 1.0 mm. The analog FEs and the discriminators for each pixel are implemented outside the pixel, at the column level. The power consumption is approximately 300 mW/cm$\mathbf {^2}$, which is compatible with cooling infrastructure available at LHC experiments, and making integration of this concept viable in future high energy physics experiments. After fabrication, the sensors have been thinned to 100 $\mu$m, 200 $\mu$m and 300 $\mu$m total thickness and then post-processed for backside biasing. The time resolution of several sensors with different thicknesses has been measured in 3 test-beam campaigns using high energy muons (Minimum Ionizing Particles) at CERN SPS in 2021 and 2022. A resolution of 65.3 ps has been measured with on-chip FE and discriminator. This paper will focus on the results of these test-beam campaigns.

Résumé : Purpose: Partial nephrectomy (PN) for large or complex renal tumors can be difficult and associated with a higher risk of recurrence than radical nephrectomy. We aim to evaluate the clinical useful of nephrometry scores for predicting oncological outcomes in a large cohort of patients who underwent PN for renal cell carcinomas. Methods: Our analysis included patients who underwent PN for renal cell carcinoma in 21 French academic centers (2010-2020). RENAL, PADUA, and SPARE scores were calculated based on preoperative imaging. Uni- and multivariate cox models were performed to identify predictors of recurrence-free survival and overall survival. The area under the curve (AUC) was used to identify models with the highest discrimination. Decision curve analyses (DCAs) determined the net benefit associated with their use. Results: A total of 1927 patients were analyzed with a median follow-up of 32 months (14-45). RENAL score (p = 0.01), age (p = 0.002), histological type (p = 0.001), high nuclear grade (p = 0.001), necrotic component (p < 0.001), and positive margins (p = 0.005) were significantly related to recurrence in multivariate analyses. The discriminative performance of the 3 radiological scores was modest (65, 63, and 63%, respectively). All 3 scores showed good calibration, which, however, deteriorated with time. Decision curve analysis of the three models for the prediction of overall and recurrence-free survival was similar for all three scores and of limited clinical relevance. Conclusion: The association between nephrometry scores and oncological outcomes after NP is very weak. The use of these scores for predicting oncological outcomes in routine practice is therefore of limited clinical value.

Résumé : Background: The impact of work-related asthma (WRA) on quality of life (QoL) and work productivity remains largely neglected/uncertain despite its high prevalence. Objective: To investigate the association of WRA with QoL and work productivity as compared with subjects with non-WRA and those without asthma and rhinitis. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out among workers during their periodic occupational health visit in Belgium. The Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, the 8-item Medical Outcome Study Short Form instrument, and the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment-General Health questionnaire were administered. Survey participants were divided into 3 groups: (1) WRA (current asthma with ≥2 respiratory symptoms at work; n = 89); (2) non-WRA (current asthma without work-related respiratory symptoms; n = 119); and (3) the reference group (no asthma and no lower respiratory, nasal, or eye symptoms; n = 815). Associations of QoL and work productivity with WRA were evaluated by multivariable regression analyses. Results: WRA and having poor asthma control were significantly associated with lower global Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire scores compared with non-WRA. Asthmatic subjects had significantly lower physical and mental health component scores of the 8-item Medical Outcome Study Short Form instrument and overall work productivity compared with the reference group, with greater impairment in workers with WRA than in those without WRA. Moreover, workers with WRA had higher percentages of doctor visits and income reduction because of respiratory symptoms than those with non-WRA. Work-related rhinitis and depression were associated with reduced QoL, independent of the effect of WRA. Conclusions: WRA should be managed comprehensively to reduce the worsening of QoL and work productivity of those affected.
