Résumé : Background Species of the genus Echis , particularly those of the ‘ ocellatus ’ group, are responsible for the majority of snakebite envenomations and deaths in the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. In a clinical study conducted in Cameroon, we treated a series of patients bitten by formally identified E. romani . The clinical outcomes are described and discussed. Methodology/Principal findings Specimens brought in by the victim were identified by a herpetologist. Clinical description and therapeutic management followed a standardized protocol applied by trained physicians. We included 92 patients, 95% of whom (n = 87) were envenomated. More than one third of the bites occurred during agricultural work, and one quarter in the victim’s home. The bite site was the foot in 48 victims (52%) and the hand in 40 others (43%), mostly children and teenagers. Cytotoxic syndrome was observed in 84 of the 87 envenomated patients (97%). Hemostasis disorders were observed in 78 patients (90%), 38 of whom (44%) experienced bleeding during hospitalization. In 5 of the latter (13%), the bleeding recurred, whereas it had stopped after antivenom administration. A further 7 patients, who were not bleeding on arrival, experienced late bleeding despite antivenom administration. Four patients (4.3%), including one pregnant woman, died. All were bleeding on arrival. Finally, 2 patients (2.2%) had permanent sequelae of moderate severity. Conclusion/Significance This study confirms the frequency and severity of hemorrhagic complications in E. romani envenomation. Lethality remains high despite antivenom treatment. Cytotoxic syndromes, present in 95% of victims, rarely progress to extensive necrosis.

Résumé : We present relative astrometric measurements of visual double stars, made in 2017-2018 with the speckle camera PISCO at the 1-m Epsilon telescope of the C2PU facility (Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, Calern site). Our observing list contains orbital couples as well as double stars whose motion is still uncertain. From our observations of 1400 multiple stars, we obtained 1376 new measurements with angular separations in the range 0′′ .1 — 8′′ .5, and an average accuracy of 0′′ .008. The mean error on the position angles is 0◦ .50. Most of the position angles were determined without the usual 180◦ ambiguity with the application of the direct vector auto-correlation technique and/or by inspection of the long integration files. We present new and revised orbits for A1913 AB, A1710, COU1394, BU1185, A122, A570, HU577, COU812, HU332, A2095 AB, and A884, partly derived from our PISCO observations. The corresponding estimated values for the masses of those systems are compatible with the spectral types.

Résumé : In March 2025, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote, newly proposed taxa were added to those under the mandate of the Plant Viruses Subcommittee. In brief, 1 new order, 3 new families, 6 new genera, 2 new subgenera and 206 new species were created. Some taxa were reorganized. Genus Cytorhabdovirus in the family Rhabdoviridae was abolished and its taxa were redistributed into three new genera Alphacytorhabdovirus , Betacytorhabdovirus and Gammacytorhabdovirus . Genus Waikavirus in the family Secoviridae was reorganized into two subgenera ( Actinidivirus and Ritunrivirus ). One family and four previously unaffiliated genera were moved to the newly established order Tombendovirales . Twelve species not assigned to a genus were abolished. To comply with the ICTV mandate of a binomial format for virus species, eight species were renamed. Demarcation criteria in the absence of biological information were defined in the genus Ilarvirus (family Bromoviridae ). This article presents the updated taxonomy put forth by the Plant Viruses Subcommittee and ratified by the ICTV.

Résumé : Key actors of mammalian immunity originated from bacterial antiphage systems. The full extent of immune system conservation between bacteria and eukaryotes is unknown. Here, we show that the silent information regulator 2 (SIR2) protein domain, present in antiphage systems, plays a role in eukaryotic innate immunity. We identified SIRal, a human protein with a SIRim domain (subtype of SIR2) that plays a pivotal role in the animal Toll-like receptor pathway of innate immunity and protects against bacterial and viral infections. Proteins containing a SIRim domain are found across 19% of eukaryotic genomes, including zebrafish, where SIRal plays a role in inflammation. This work opens up avenues of research on the immune role of eukaryotic SIRim proteins as well as on the involvement of SIRal in human pathology.

Résumé : Gut health and microbiome development are closely linked in early life, with human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) playing a key role. This study reports results through 4 months of age from a trial evaluating an infant formula containing a synbiotic blend of HMOs and probiotics, focusing on growth, gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance, and gut health biomarkers from birth to 15 months. Materials and methods Healthy infants aged ≤14 days were randomized to receive either the experimental formula (SYN; control formula supplemented with six HMOs and two probiotics [ B. infantis , B. lactis ]) or the control formula (CTRL; partially hydrolyzed 100% whey-based formula). A non-randomized breastfed (BF) group served as a reference. The primary endpoint was weight gain velocity in SYN vs. CTRL through 4 months of age. Secondary endpoints included fecal outcomes (abundance of bifidobacteria, immune and gut health markers), GI tolerance, and adverse events (AEs). Results The full analysis set (FAS) included 313 infants (118 in SYN, 114 in CTRL, and 81 BF), while the per-protocol population (PP) included 227 infants (84 in SYN, 84 in CTRL, and 59 BF). Weight gain velocity through 4 months in the SYN group was non-inferior to that in the CTRL group in both FAS and PP analyses (both p < 0.0001). Parent-reported GI tolerance and stool patterns were similar between SYN and CTRL groups through 4 months. At 3 months, Bifidobacteria abundance was significantly higher in the SYN group compared to the CTRL group ( p = 0.004). Fecal pH was lower in the SYN group than in the CTRL group ( p = 0.018) and more closely resembled that of the BF group. Immune and gut health markers were similar between the SYN and BF groups. No significant differences in AEs were observed across groups. Conclusion The synbiotic-supplemented infant formula supported healthy, age-appropriate growth, good GI tolerance, and increased the abundance of beneficial bifidobacteria through4 months of age.

Résumé : Background Millions of households have cats or dogs as pets, and infections due to bites or scratches are increasing, with the most common pathogens being Pasteurella spp., Bartonella spp., Capnocytophaga spp, and Francisella tularensis. The objective of this study was to describe patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for infection transmitted by cats or dogs, as well as their outcomes. Methods The retrospective multicentre observational cohort study PETSEPSIS included consecutive adults admitted to 46 ICUs in France between 2009 and 2019 for sepsis due to cat or dog bites and/or caused by any of the four above-listed bacteria. We described their features and outcomes and performed univariate and multivariate analyses to identify factors associated with death. Results We included 174 patients with a median age of 64 [50–74] years; 58.1% were male. The median SAPS II score was 42 [28–58]. Mechanical ventilation was required in 51.2% of patients, for a median duration of 7 [4–13] days. Vasopressor support was used in 53.5%, renal replacement therapy in 19%, and limb amputation in 3.6% of the patients. The median ICU length of stay was 7 [4–16] days. Hospital mortality was 24.1%. The clinical presentation and severity of sepsis were similar across bacteria, although patients with Pasteurella spp. were older and had more comorbidities. Contact with cats were more often reported for Pasteurella spp. and Bartonella spp. infections and contact with dogs for Capnocytophaga spp. infections. Risk factors for hospital mortality present on ICU admission were older age, smoking, preexisting liver disease, high serum creatinine, and anaemia. Neither the type of micro-organism nor the initial antimicrobial treatment was associated with mortality. Conclusions This large multicentre study shows that infections transmitted by cats and dogs are infrequent reasons for ICU admission but are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Mortality was associated with older age and comorbidities but not with the type of microorganism or initial antibiotic treatment.

Résumé : Emission spectra of nitrogen and of mixtures of nitrogen with argon, helium and hydrogen were studied by Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) in the afterglows of flowing microwave discharges. Absolute concentrations of N, N 2 (X, v'=12-13), N 2 (A) and N 2 + were determined in the mixtures at different distances from the discharge from band intensity ratios and from NO titration. In Ar/N 2 and He/N 2 mixtures, absolute N atom densities were compared with Two-photon Absorption Laser-Induced Fluorescence (TALIF) measurements. As all bands originating from the v' = 0-12 levels of the N 2 (B) state were observed, it was possible to obtain rate coefficients for the N-atom 3-body recombination towards every N 2 (B,v') levels in each studied mixture. In H 2 /N 2 mixtures, absolute H-atoms densities were also measured with the TALIF technique and a kinetic model was built, demonstrating how H and NH densities can be derived from the observed NH A-X (0-0) band intensity at 336 nm.

Résumé : Plant diversification at field, farm, and landscape scales is a key strategy for protecting crops from pests. But its level of adoption remains confidential, while the overall negative impacts of pesticides are now well established. To understand the obstacles to this adoption, we conducted an extensive review of literature in life and socio-economic sciences. We found that all diversification practices are largely effective in pest control, achieving satisfactory yields and many ecological cobenefits, although context dependent. Plant diversification does not appear solely as an alternative to pesticide-based pest control but as a transformative approach to achieve sustainable agrifood systems. However, its adoption is currently strongly hindered by socioeconomic barriers, including low short-term profitability, rigid agricultural sectors, and limited support from public policies. The most beneficial practices, agroforestry and diversified landscapes, face the greatest obstacles. In contrast, cultivar mixtures, while easier to implement, offer limited cobenefits. Collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and local stakeholders seems essential to scale up plant diversification.

Résumé : Purpose: Decision-making for management of immunosuppressive drugs in solid organ transplant patients admitted to the ICU remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a temporary suspension strategy (interruption of immunosuppressive drugs > 24h) on day-90 mortality and ICU-acquired infections. Methods: This multicenter observational retrospective study conducted in solid organ transplant patients admitted to nine ICUs used a Bayesian approach with priors based on a belief elicitation process conducted among a panel of experts. Results: Among 591 enrolled patients, suspension strategy was used in 34% of them, during a median period of 5 days [IQR: 3-10]. This approach was more common in patients admitted for sepsis (38%) or COVID-19 (49%) than for non-septic causes (24%) (p < 0.001). Overall, day-90 mortality reached 30%, and Bayesian analysis revealed substantial uncertainty with an OR at 1.13 (95% Credible Interval (CrI): 0.74-1.70), and a 15% probability of a beneficial effect. In the subgroup of patients with sepsis, OR was at 0.90 (95% CrI: 0.55-1.55), with a 50% probability of a beneficial effect. ICU-acquired infections occurred in 26% of patients. The suspension strategy indicated a potential benefit, both in the entire cohort, with a 73% probability of a beneficial effect [OR: 0.74 (95% CrI: 0.49-1.15)], and in the subgroup of sepsis patients with a 78% probability of beneficial effect [OR 0.70 (95% CrI, 0.42-1.16)]. Conclusion: Temporary suspension of immunosuppressive drugs may reduce the risk of ICU-acquired infections, with a true uncertainty on day-90 mortality. Prospective studies are warranted to confirm these results.
