Résumé : Objective To assess adherence to clinical practice guidelines for three interventions routinely used in critical care medicine. Design and setting Multicenter, 1-day cross-sectional observational study in 44 intensive care units in four countries. Patients A total of 419 patients hospitalized in participating ICUs on the day of the survey. Measurements and results Red blood cell transfusion (n = 29) was performed appropriately in 22 patients (76%), while among the 390 patients who received no transfusion 4 (1%) had a valid indication. Setting of tidal volume in acute respiratory distress syndrome, assessed in 45 patients, was deemed appropriate in 37 cases (82%). Prescription of stress ulcer prophylaxis (n = 128) was appropriate in only 24 patients (19%), while among the 268 patients who were not treated 28 (10%) had an indication. Conclusions The implementation of recommendations varies across different domains of care. While the adherence to current recommendations in routine practice is acceptable as regards tidal volume settings in acute respiratory distress syndrome, it is suboptimal for blood transfusion and prevention of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Practice surveys are useful to inform strategies currently developed to assess practices of health-care professionals and develop strategies for more effective dissemination of medical knowledge.

Résumé : We present recent results obtained in the Toulouse's group that deal with proton to base and nucleoside interactions. We stress the weakness of the sugar part in the nucleoside, i.e. the uridine molecule under scrutiny. Since some parts of the fragmentation spectrum correspond to the fragmentation of a 'pure' uracil molecule, i.e. the RNA base, an 'additivity rule' seems to prevail for the nucleoside, something that still has to be confirmed. Moreover, some results that deal with the secondary electronic emission from uracil are also displayed.

Résumé : Using open-top chambers, the impact of ozone (O3) on foliar carboxylases of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was investigated. From sowing, beans were exposed to non-filtered air (NF) and NF supplied with 40 (+40) and 80 (+80) nL L_1 O3. Twenty days after emergence, primary and first trifoliate leaves were sampled. Biochemical characteristics of leaves from +40 were quite similar to those from NF. Conversely, +80 induced distinct biochemical effects in primary and first trifoliate leaves. Regarding primary leaves, +80 reduced ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity by 33% whereas it stimulated phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) activity by 376%. The reduction in Rubisco activity was accompanied by a decrease in both Rubisco subunit amounts and a consistent oxidative modification of the Rubisco small subunit (SSU). These changes came with a drastic loss in pigmentation. Regarding first trifoliate leaves, +80 stimulated Rubisco activity by 33% while it disturbed neither PEPc activity nor pigmentation. Surprisingly, the enhanced Rubisco activity was associated with a slight decrease in Rubisco protein quantity, which was not coupled with the formation of carbonyl groups in Rubisco-SSU.

Résumé : Natural mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) samples recovered from diamond-anvil cell (DAC) experiments performed between 33 to 89 GPa and 1700 to 2600 K were studied with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). We used the focused ion beam (FIB) lift-out technique to prepare the recovered high-pressure, laser-heated samples for TEM study. Observations of TEM sections show the presence of five phases for samples transformed at pressures ranging from 33 to 45 GPa: Al-bearing Mg-perovskite, Ca-silicate perovskite, stishovite, and two Al-rich phases. The Al-rich phases were identified by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns and chemical composition analysis, and include the new aluminous (NAL) phase with hexagonal structure and the calcium ferrite (CF) type phase. Chemical analyses obtained by analytical transmission electron microscopy (ATEM) show that Mg-silicate perovskite is the major host for Al, with significant amounts also distributed between the CF-type and NAL phases, and less than 1 wt% in stishovite. Beyond pressures of ~40 GPa (~1100 km depth), the Al content of Mg-perovskite and CF-type phase increases. Between 45 and 50 GPa, the NAL phase disappears. This mineralogical change may explain reported seismic anomalies in subduction zones at mid-mantle depths

Résumé : Dynamic modeling Despite many mathematical models available in the literature for simulation and optimization of anaerobic digestion processes, only few can accurately account for hydrogen production. In the present study, experiments were performed in a continuous stirred tank reactor with a hydraulic retention time close to 6 h. pH was regulated to 5.5 and agitation was maintained at 300 rpm. Molasses were used as substrate with feeding concentrations varying between 5 and 20 g L-1. Experimental data were used to estimate the pseudo-stoichiometric coefficients with a constrained nonlinear optimization. The obtained pseudo-stoichiometric matrix is made of two reactions, one being associated with hydrogen production and the other one with acetate production. Finally, a dynamic model is derived and is demonstrated to simulate very accurately the dynamic evolution of hydrogen production, but also biomass and intermediate compounds (i.e., individual volatile fatty acids) concentrations while being very close to the stoichiometric balance. Finally, the best hydrogen production was for a concentration of substrate of 20.09 g L-1 and a liquid feed flow of 5 L d-1 (i.e., 1.47 mol-H2 mol-glucose-1).

Résumé : We propose a model where imperfect matching between firms and workers on local labor markets leads to incentives for spatial agglomeration. We show that the occurence of spatial agglomeration depends on initial size differences in terms of both number of workers and firms. Allowing for dynamics of workers' and firms' location choices, we show that the spatial outcome depends crucially on different dimensions of agents' mobility. The effect of a higher level of human capital on regional disparities depends on whether it makes workers more mobile or more specialized on the labor market.
