Résumé : A method is presented for estimating the calibration error affecting L-band ground-based radiometers, using the sky as a cold source. In a first step, the optimum conditions to perform this calibration are limited by removing sky areas where large radiation contributors (Sun and Moon) are present. In the region thus selected, an accurate computation of the brightness temperature measured by the antenna is performed using available sky background temperature survey charts (radio continuum and hydrogen HI line) and integrating the sky temperature over the directional gain pattern of a representative radiometer L-band antenna. Contributions from rear lobe are not considered. After adding the atmospheric contribution, maps of the noise temperature and its error are produced for the region of interest. The best calibration orientation for a sky-looking radiometer at medium northern latitude would be 0° in azimuth (northward) and an elevation equal to the radiometer's latitude. It is found that the computed total sky noise contribution is 6.6 K, with 24 hour variations of ±0.2 K and a maximum bias of ±0.6 K. The results are valid for the whole year, assuming low to moderate solar activity and no rain.

Résumé : The kinetics of tropane alkaloid biosynthesis, particularly the isomerization of littorine into hyoscyamine, were studied by analyzing the kinetics of carbon-13 (13C) in metabolites of Datura innoxia hairy root cultures fed with labeled tropoyl moiety precursors. Both littorine and hyoscyamine were the major alkaloids accumulated, while scopolamine was never detected. Feeding root cultures with (RS)-phenyl[1,3-13C2]lactic acid led to 13C spin-spin coupling detected on C-1' and C-2' of the hyoscyamine skeleton, which validated the intramolecular rearrangement of littorine into hyoscyamine. Label from phenyl[1-13C]alanine or (RS)-phenyl[1,3-13C2]lactic acid was incorporated at higher levels in littorine than in hyoscyamine. Initially, the apparent hyoscyamine biosynthesized rate (vapphyo = 0.9 mol 13C·flask-1·d-1) was lower than littorine formation (vapplitto = 1.8 mol 13C·flask-1·d-1), suggesting that the isomerization reaction could be rate limiting. The results obtained for the kinetics of littorine biosynthesis were in agreement with the role of this compound as a direct precursor of hyoscyamine biosynthesis.

Constraints solving, optimization and robust interval analysis
Résumé : This paper addresses the workspace analysis of the orthoglide, a 3-DOF parallel mechanism designed for machining applications. This machine features three fixed parallel linear joints which are mounted orthogonally and a mobile platform which moves in the Cartesian x-y-z space with fixed orientation. The workspace analysis is conducted on the bases of prescribed kinetostatic performances. The interesting features of the orthoglide are a regular Cartesian workspace shape, uniform performances in all directions and good compactness. Interval analysis based methods for computing the dextrous workspace and the largest cube enclosed in this workspace are presented.

Résumé : Previous studies have provided conflicting evidence regarding the association of the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene with autism. Two polymorphisms have been identified in the human 5-HTT gene, a VNTR in intron 2 and a functional deletion/insertion in the promoter region (5-HTTLPR) with short and long variants. Positive associations of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism with autism have been reported by two family-based studies, but one found preferential transmission of the short allele and the other of the long allele. Two subsequent studies failed to find evidence of transmission disequilibrium at the 5-HTTLPR locus. These conflicting results could be due to heterogeneity of clinical samples with regard to serotonin (5-HT) blood levels, which have been found to be elevated in some autistic subjects. Thus, we examined the association of the 5-HTTLPR and VNTR polymorphisms of the 5-HTT gene with autism, and we investigated the relationship between 5-HTT variants and whole-blood 5-HT. The transmission/disequilibrium test (TDT) revealed no linkage disequilibrium at either loci in a sample of 96 families comprising 43 trios and 53 sib pairs. Furthermore, no significant relationship between 5-HT blood levels and 5-HTT gene polymorphisms was found. Our results suggest that the 5-HTT gene is unlikely to play a major role as a susceptibility factor in autism.

Résumé : The volatile constituents of the supposed defensive secretions of the glandular pouches of the adults of both sexes of the cockroach Therea petiveriana have been shown to contain N-3-methylbutylacetamide (MBA) and N-3-methylbutylpropanamide (MBP), which represented 60% of the volatile fraction. The other 40% included acidic, aromatic, and aldehydic compounds. Behavioral experiments demonstrated that the secretion acts as an alarm pheromone for adults.
